What Are the Best Chapter Books for Kids Ages 7-9?

The best kids book series for children ages 7-9 will keep readers who are new to chapter books entertained and wanting to read more. The characters become beloved in the first installment of the series and the reader cannot wait to get to the next one and discover their new adventures.

It is very important for children in the primary grades who are just starting to read chapter books to find characters they can relate to. The more they become engaged with a character, the more likely she will want to read more about her.

And the more a child reads, the better reader she will become.

These popular series for children ages 7-9 have been around for many years. The characters stand the test of time.

Junie B. Jones by Barbara Park

Barbara Park’s series features Junie B. Jones, begins with five year Junie B. on her first day of kindergarten. The trials and tribulations that Junie B. has with her parents, her best friends Lucille and Grace, and her teacher are very relatable to her readers. Junie B. speaks her mind and makes up words, and she is funny. There are twenty-seven Junie B. Jones books that take her to the spring of first grade.

Magic Tree House by Mary Pope Osborne

Mix a little history with a little fantasy and you have one of the most popular and best children's books of the past fifteen years. There are forty-six books in the time travel series, along with research guides to teach the reader about that time in historyin which the story takes place. Jack and his little sister Annie find a tree house full of books…and the adventures begin!

Horrible Harry by Suzy Kline

In this popular series for new readers, Suzy Kline tells the tales of Horrible Harry. He starts out in second grade, and readers see how his relationships with his peers develop from second grade to third grade. There are typical misadventures and lessons learned in the twenty-nine Horrible Harry books.

Nate the Great by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat

Nate the Great is one of the best series to introduce the mystery genre to youngsters. In the twenty-six books, Nate and his dog Sludge, are off to solve neighborhood mysteries.

Cam Jansen by David Adler

In another wonderful mystery series, Cam Jansen, a girl detective with a photographic memory, solves what appears to be unsolvable. There are thirty-one Cam Jansen stories and fifteen Young Cam Jansen books for readers to enjoy.

American Girl Series Various Authors

In the late 1980’s a series of books called American Girl books were published. Each series of six books focuses on one girl in a separate time period of American history. Initially, the only books were Samantha in 1912, Molly in 1944, and Kirsten 1844. Girls from other cultures and ethnic background were added over the years to make it more inclusive.

While there are other titles to read, in my opinion, these are some of the best kids book series for children ages 7-9. As a parent and as a teacher, these are books my own children and students have read and loved over the years.

I have an 8 year old grandson. I'll keep this list handy when I do my Christmas shopping!

Hi: I enjoyed this article even though we haven't had little kids around for over 4 decades. I
remember thinking that I would "knock out" two or three children's books and thought I
could until I gave it a try. Darn! Children books takes a special talent, especially good ones.
2 thumbs plus a rating.

Marlando, children's books are hard to write because they function at a different cognitive level and do not get nuances like an adult. Plus, it better be funny and have a happy ending!

One book I used to teach was Journey by Patricia MacLachlan. It did not have a happy ending and my class always found it a bit unsettling.

Thank you for reading!
