If you are looking for the best place to spend your spring break, then Mexico can give you all that you need. Mexico is still a top destination even with some areas of the country being placed in the danger list by the State department and some news outlets. You need to understand where the danger is in to choose the best possible destinations. Most of the danger is in the north of the country close to the US border with tourist towns which have been kept very safe by the local and federal authorities being the exception. Some beach towns south of the border are in fact safer than a most in the US.
Cancun is known as one of the best destinations in the world for spring break and it is on top of the list in Mexico. You will find some of the best Caribbean beaches here and the resorts are ready to welcome students. The party scene in Cancun is safe and a lot of fun so there is not much to worry about for parents sending their kids to Cancun. Going to the resorts in this region of the Yucatán Peninsula is much safer than heading to South Florida or Lake Havasu. It is not recommended however that you book hostels in the city because while some are nice, a few of them are a bit run down.
The best thing that you can do is to book a room in the resorts area. MTV has actually hosted their Spring Break parties here in the past. It is also possible to travel to other towns like Playa del Carmen where the party goes on all night long and when you wake up you will have the beautiful Mexican Caribbean ocean welcoming you.
Puerto Vallarta is another popular destination with those looking to spend a fun time during spring break. Puerto Vallarta gives you the best of both worlds with a great modern city tourist town and an old Mexico experience. You will be very safe in Puerto Vallarta, and getting helpful information about the city is not difficult at all. Look for the tourist police which wear white safari looking clothes as they can answer tourists' information. They are also the reason the city is very safe. Puerto gives you all the amenities Cancun gives you and traditional Mexican sights that you get nowhere else.
Puerto Vallarta like many of the beaches in the Pacific coast line are great for water sports, especially surfing. You can rent a boat for a few hours for around 40 dollars which will take you sports fishing or dolphin watching in the morning. At night there are several clubs ready to keep the spring party going.
Puerto Escondido is a much quieter choice for those looking for a beach vacation during spring break; that does not mean that it is not great to party. This is the surfing spot in the Pacific, especially now that Acapulco is having some security issues. Puerto Escondido does not have as many amenities and though there are good hotel choices you should not expect those that you would find in Cancun and Puerto Vallarta. That is what makes Puerto Escondido a good choice; it is a different type of Mexican beach town.
Most of the better party spots are on the Playa Principal section of town and by Playa Zicatela. You should not expect a big resort town when you visit Puerto Escondido as it is more likely that you will feel as if you are in a hippie atmosphere. If you are looking to party then you should not stay by Barra or Carrizalillo which are a lot quieter. Also close to Puerto Escondido are Zipolite and Huatulco which can also be a lot of fun.
Cozumel is a bit quieter tan most destinations almost year round, but it gets a lot of spring breakers visiting by cruise and by air when spring break arrives. The quiet beaches to the east of the island see a lot more action, but most of the clubs are close to the cruises on the west of Cozumel. If you are visiting by cruise there is a chance that you will not spend the night which would be a big waste. Look for cruises that will allow you to spend at least one night in the island.
If you are traveling by plane and will be in Cozumel for a few days, then do not forget to take the ferry to Playa del carmen at least once. 5th Avenue which is right by where the ferry docks has a lot of smaller bars and clubs to enjoy as well as a couple of big ones. The party usually lasts all night especially on the weekend and during the spring break time.
Cabo San Lucas
Finally you should also visit Cabo San Lucas during spring break. Cabo San Lucas is still very safe even with the security problems to the north of the country. The truth is that most of the Baja California beach areas are safe, but as far as partying nothing compares to Los Cabos. The water is great and the club scene is one of the best in Mexico. The resorts get booked by mostly students during this time of the year, but you could find a room in the hotels in the tourist area. Keep in mind that the Cabos area is rather large so if a hotel is not available right by San Lucas you will be able to party in other places
Another plus for Cabo San Lucas is that it is not a far drive from the San Diego border which makes getting there by plane or by car very easy. Rosarito is closer to the US border and it is still very safe if you decide that you do not want to go that far south. The truth however is that the beaches by Cabo San Lucas are as beautiful as you could find in the Pacific coast line and the parties are a lot safer and better.
