Increasingly as droves of people worldwide are resorting to the web to find their soulmates, subsequently there has been a massive proliferation of online dating sites. Each one of them tom-toms their unique fail proof scientific method that they use to find someone’s perfect match. But whether there is a sound scientific basis behind these methods is a contentious issue.

Their modus operandi is pretty simple. For a particular fee these websites will collate certain information, about you, feed the numbers to generate your perfect match, who just like you as per the website, has been screened for compatibility with you across different parameters. Websites like eHarmony, Chemistry, Perfect Match etc put forth such outlandish scientific claims.

But the burning question is that can a simple mathematical calculation actually identify a pair of compatible singles who will have a fruitful romantic liaison in the future?

Most experts feel that the science that these websites claim they use, is utter hogwash. Since none of these websites have actually disclosed the kind of algorithm they use, serious doubts hover of their effectiveness. Decades of scientific research pertaining to the exact factors that make two people romantically compatible, suggest that it is impossible for these online dating sites to make good on their claims by the method that they currently employ.

One of the major drawbacks of this approach is that most of the sites fail to collect a lot of crucial information about a particular individual. As reams of data that these sites collect are mostly from singles, they cannot accurately predict how two people will react and interact with each other when put together. Different facets of a relationship which only emerge when two people come to know each other- aspects like communication patterns, sexual compatibility, shared interests- are crucial factors that determines the course of any relationship. Extensive studies have irrefutably proved that the manner in which couples interact and resolve disputes or disagreements determines the success and failure of any relationship.

Environmental factors like unemployment or loss of job, financial duress, infertility or illness of any sort are also no taken into account by these websites. But there are clear indications that these factors can affect the course of any relationship in a major way. For instance, in a landmark 2004 study by eminent psychologist Lisa Neff, it was seen that wives who were subjected to constant stress outside marriage, started to evaluate their marriages in a negative way over time.

Another major loophole in these dating sites methods is that the information they collect about individuals definitely do not present a full picture. It only gives a tiny slice of the person’s characteristics and therefore cannot form the basis of matching compatibility. Undoubtedly certain characteristics can predict the romantic disposition of a person. For instance, decades of research suggest that people, who experience problems in their relationships, are generally emotionally volatile, grossly mistreated during childhood or suffers from abuse of drug and alcohol. So removing these people, who are most likely to have a failed relationship, from the dating pool, can actually be a valuable service.

However, these dating sites claim to do much more than simply giving access to people to an improved dating pool. They are supposed to bring together two perfectly compatible people who will gel together and have a prosperous future. They claim people who are similar in certain aspects are more likely to have a successful relationship together than with those who are dissimilar.

However, these similarities cannot be an actual foundation for any enduring relationship. There are a host of other extraneous factors which these dating sites fail to consider; as a result their methods are in no way comprehensive. So it is high time that people become aware about the glitches in the online dating sites and take an informed decision
