The image of the bow tie has been tarnished over time. The bow tie was first worn in the 16th century by Croatian mercenaries, and since then it has seen it's stock rise and fall. The 18th and 19th centuries saw the bow tie flourish, but as time went on they fell out of favor and the necktie took control of the market. Bow ties were worn only by nerds to accent their pocket protectors. It has been a long road back but they made it. Maybe we should call this revival "Revenge of the Nerds" because the bow tie is back!

The image of the bow tie long stood with names like Pee Wee Herman or Bill Nye the Science Guy. Today however, if you tune in to the Academy Awards you will see guys like Brad Pitt or Ryan Gosling proudly sporting their bow ties. Open any fashion magazine or check out the postgame press conferences of an NBA or NFL game and you won't be able to miss them. The bow tie has made a rapid ascent into pop culture and it is time for you to join the club.

First, I need to offer this disclaimer to anyone considering adding a bow tie into their rotation. If you are not fully committed to wearing the bow tie, do not wear it. I repeat, if you're heart is not in it, put it to the side and save it for another time. A bow tie is a bold statement and it must be worn with confidence. If you are not sold on it no one else will be either. Wear it, but only when you are ready.

If you want to make a simple statement I would suggest a solid colored bow tie but if you are feeling bold go with a polka dot or paisley print. Lastly, make sure you get a "self tie" bow tie. The clip-ons or "pre-tied" are acceptable for your senior prom but a grown man ties his own tie. Don't be intimidated. If you can tie your shoe you can tie a bow tie. The video below gives a good step-by-step lesson on the art of tying your bow tie.

This simple knot can give your outfit a huge upgrade. Have some confidence and make a statement with your new look. Good luck, gentlemen.
