When it comes to our furry feline friends, people can't seem to get enough of pampering them. From specialty cat furniture, cat toys, and even gourmet cat food, we treat our cats like the kings and queens they so frequently act like. Because of this, pet supply manufacturers all over the world have come up with an almost infinite selection of cat toys and cat beds for even the most discriminating feline and owner. But how do you choose the right cat toys and bed for your favorite cat? First we must look at just what we are buying.

What is a Cat Bed?

A cat bed is simply any soft object your cat decides to sleep on. So technically (and in many cases) your bed is a cat bed! But seriously, when people refers to a cat bed they are speaking of small, softly upholstered beds especially made for cats. These cat beds are usually round in shape, and can feature many add ons like small roofs and even attachable toys. Many cat owners swear by the purchase of a cat bed, because it helps keep unwanted cat hair off of furniture. If your cat is in it's bed, it's not on your couch.

What is a Cat Toy?

Any small object around the house could be considered by your cat to be a toy. But generally a cat toy reffers to any number of specialty toys made specifically for house cats. These toys include small fake mice, balls, teasers, cat trees, and even laser pointers! Every house cat is deep down a highly efficient predator, and cat toys are a great way to help exercise your cat's predatory instincts in a safe and healthy way.

Buying Cat Toys and Beds

When you go out to buy your cats new toys and bed, there are a couple of things to consider. First off you have to think about how big your cat is. This is very important to both cat bed and cat toy selection. The size of your cat will determine the size of the bed you will buy simply because more than likely a cat wont sleep in a bed that's too small or too large. When it comes to cat toys, buying a toy that is too small could mean the death of your feline friend, as small toys can be easily swallowed or inhaled durring heavy play. Next, the age of your cat should be a concern. Old cats can have trouble retaining sufficient body heat at night or in colder climates, so cat beds with extra fluffy lining and especially little roofs are your best bet. Teaser toys are also great for older cats, as they can remain lying down and playfully bat at the teaser with their front paws.
