The City of Denia
Denia is situated to the north of Benidorm and Alicante city and very near to the city of Javea. It is located in the south east of Spain in the province of Alicante which is on the Costa Blanca. These days, the province of Alicante and many other areas up and down the coast are easily accessible by road and by air. The quickest way to get to Denia is by flying into one of the two airports in the region. You can choose from either Alicante airport which is to the south, and not too far away from Denia, or you can fly in to Valencia airport to the north. Many European airlines fly into these airports. Also, you can fly to the southern airport of Murcia although this is a bit further away and will take you approximately an hour and a half to get to Denia by car after you have landed.
Denia has a very long history going right back to the Stone Age. Indeed, there are archaeological remains in Denia which date from the Middle Stone Age. The city has also been influenced by the Romans and the Visigoths. But one of the biggest influences on the city has been the Moors. You can see this in the architecture and many other different aspects such as the cuisine and the Moorish aspects to the Spanish language. The Moors also supplied much of the area with excellent irrigation systems which fed the land and made the land arable for many different types of crops, so agriculture was always a big part of the local economy.
Under James II, Denia was reconquered in 1244. This led to a massive depopulation of the city as the Muslims fled or were expelled. Gradually, over the years, the population began to rise again and Denia once again began to prosper. Because of their open involvement in the war of succession, the people of Denia suffered reprisals which were immediate and bloody. Denia has also suffered in other times, such as in the 20th century when the dreaded phylloxera attacked the grape crop, decimating the entire industry.
Like many other towns and cities in the area, Denia has come into its own with tourism and construction from the 1960s onwards. And, it is very easy to see why. Not only is the landscape so fertile and yet diverse with mountain ranges and valleys, rivers and spectacular coastline, but each of its cities has a very tangible past with the architecture allowing the viewer to virtually have a glimpse back in time. Then there is the Food & Drink. How good is it to sit in an avenue underneath the Mediterranean Palm whilst sipping a glass of red wine and eating some typically Spanish morsels in the form of tapas?
One point to emphasize here it to be sure that you rent a car if you are intending on venturing outside Denia. Getting around in Denia itself is fairly easy so large that you cannot get around by foot, but if you want to venture further afield you will need to hire a car. Denia car hire can supply you with any vehicle of your choice. Another option is to pick up a car at the airport when you land. You will find that many car rental companies which are based in Denia who will only be too happy to provide a car at the airport once you have picked up your luggage.
