The Death of Television

By Edited Apr 25, 2014 1 0

As time unfolds, traditional technologies are becoming obsolete due to newer technologies. This has taken it's toll on the entertainment industry, as our methods do not remain stagnant, but constantly change. This has caused several modes of entertainment to change, in order to make them more beneficial.

TV (37316)

The standard form of television is becoming less popular. Different methods of television viewing are becoming available, thus hurting the traditional industry. The days of gathering around a television set at a specific time in order to watch a program are fading away. Due to current technologies, our viewing experience doesn't have to be based around specific times, so we can watch a television show when it is most convenient to us.

These new technologies were brought forth by the widespread popularity of the internet. Television networks now air episodes of their shows on their websites. Usually within 24 hours of a television program airing on traditional programmed television, the episode can be streamed for free on the website. This free stream aids in the death of the television, because it makes people less likely to want the traditional form of viewing. There is little reasoning behind paying for cable or satellite service if your'e able to view new episodes of your favorite shows for free online at any time, rather than being forced to pay for the episode and being forced to watch it at a certain time.

The online website Hulu allows you to view a vast assortment of television shows from past to present, instantly streaming at your own convenience. The viewing experience is better, because advertisements take up less time than on the standard television. Through Hulu, you are able to view television episodes at your own convenience with less ads. If you'd like to view a television show instantly without advertisements, you can always turn to iTunes, which has a huge catalog of television shows and movies that you can purchase without any commercial interruption. Typically, television shows on iTunes are relatively cheap, and you can also purchase the whole season of the show that you wish to watch.

The option of purchasing a physical copy of the DVD season is also available. Several popular (and unpopular) shows are available for purchase in the form of a DVD set, usually containing a single seasons worth of the show. These can be inserted into a DVD player and watched whenever you wish, with zero commercials. Whereas DVD seasons are somewhat pricey, they usually contain bonus features for the show that you enjoy. Also, pricing for DVD seasons seems to be on the decrease as they are gaining in popularity and traditional television is becoming increasingly less watched.

Another option that's available instead of traditional television, are streaming video on demand programs, such as Netflix and Apple TV. Netflix hooks up to the television set (or can be viewed from your computer) and allows you to watch instant television shows and movies for a monthly fee. This fee for instant viewing is cheaper than most cable/internet fees, and also allows you DVD rentals from their extensive library.

Whereas the ultimate death of the traditional television will undoubtedly take time, it is bound to happen. People will learn that the standard TV set, satellite/cable option is somewhat of a redundancy when they already pay for internet service that allows them the same options at a cheaper price, or free.
