Electric Reel Mowers vs. Regular Reel Mowers

Many people are looking to take their lawn care habits green this summer and therefore are doing some research on what is the best green mower.  And with all of the new and innovative models that are being designed these days, you have a lot of options.  But what most people find is that reel mowers and their electric models are mentioned most frequently and it may lead one to ask the question what is the difference between reel mowers and electric reel mowers?  Below we outline some of the main differences between both reel lawn mowers and their electric cousins.

The most simple explanation is that electric reel mowers are a motorized version of the regular reel mower.  But to understand what this means and how it affects the performance, let's take a closer look at the reel mowers:

A reel mower is a great lawn care appliance that uses absolutely no fuel to cut with.  It used to be that this was the only way to cut grass and that the reel, which is the central part of the mower that turns and cuts the grass, made the work very efficient.  But as improvements came along and a motorized mower was developed, reel mowers became clunky and outdated.  Modern day reel mowers, however, utilize better materials that hold an edge longer and weigh much less.  That's not to say they are without problems.  The most notorious problem a reel mower faces is that it gets bogged down in thick grass and it takes a lot more effort to push the mower to do its job.

Enter electric reel mowers.  To overcome this issue, the electric reel mower added an electric mower and battery to power it.  This has the advantage of keeping a strong and consistent cut, even in thick or weedy areas.  The best electric reel mowers will utilize a lithium battery which allows it to perform longer and has the advantage of lasting to the very end (unlike other batteries which gradually die out making it difficult for the last part of the mow).

Each mower has its advantages and it really depends on how diligent you are with maintaining your lawn as to whether a reel mower would be better than an electric model.  Also keep in mind that no matter which type you choose, the amount of time it will take to mow your lawn will be longer than it would be with a traditional gas powered mower.
