Ugg short boots, as a generic footwear category, are believed to have been first made in either Australia or New Zealand. No one is entirely sure where the first pair originated, with both countries claiming them as their own. They were present in both countries throughout the twentieth century, worn in the outback to keep feet warm and worn by aviators during the Second World War.

In the 1960s, ugg short boots became popular with surfers who wore them to keep their feet warm after emerging from the ocean. Until this time, uggs were only recognized in Australia and New Zealand and the rest of the world was yet to become aware of them, but in the 1970s a surfer helped them to become popular throughout the rest of the world by taking them to the US and selling them there. After 2006, the word UGG continued to be a trademark throughout the rest of the world except for Australia and New Zealand where the term ugg can still be used as a generic term to describe a particular type of sheepskin footwear. The reason for this is that in Australia and New Zealand the term ugg has been used for nearly a century to describe a particular type of footwear, whereas in the rest of the world these boots are only known through the brand UGG Australia.

Ugg short boots have seen their popularity soar, in part, due to celebrity endorsement from a number of Hollywood stars who influence fashion. Once such star who is often seen sporting a pair of UGG Australia boots on her more casual days is Sarah Jessica Parker, who is an actress with the potential to inspire millions of fans to purchase a pair of boots.

The appeal of UGG short boots does not simply lie in the many celebrity fans, but also in their immense comfort that means that wearing a pair of uggs is as comfortable as wearing your slippers. For many young women of this generation comfort is exceptionally important to them, which is why they choose a pair of cozy ugg boots to relax in.

There are many pairs of ugg boots on the market in Australia and New Zealand, but the difference is that the boots produced by UGG Australia are made from grade A sheepskin which is a luxurious fabric of the highest quality. There are similar boots on the market, but most of these do not live up to the excellent quality that consumers have come to expect from the UGG brand.
