The Difficulty Of A Galley Kitchen Remodel

By | Mar 31, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

The kitchen is usually one of the first rooms you see when entering a home and this is why many homeowners choose to renovate their kitchen. Even more difficult is the issue of the galley kitchen remodel because there is such a strange shape to the room. Working with a galley style kitchen can be particularly different because the setup is so much different from that of a typical kitchen. Rather than being a regular sized kitchen with counters along the sides, a galley kitchen is a longer room that has two sides instead of just one and you walk through the middle of it.

The biggest problem with the galley kitchens is that there is often not a lot of room to work with and the space can easily get cluttered. The last thing you want is to have a cramped kitchen that you can barely move around in. Of course if you are investing your time and money you want to ensure things turn out right. There are a few tips in particular that can help when you are working with a galley style kitchen.

Focus on the counter tops first just as you should in any other type of kitchen remodel. This is where most of your money will be going and should be one of the most aesthetically appealing parts of the room. Darker looks in granite and marble reflect a more modern taste while if you are into the traditional style you may prefer a white or light gray color. You could have the cupboards heightened to give yourself a bit more space between the counter tops and cupboards.

This will be an added expense but then you have room to put in a decorative backsplash. Mirrors can work wonders in small spaces, especially in a galley kitchen setting. When placed strategically they can make a room look much larger than it actually is. You can find mirror tiles at any home hardware store and hang them up easily yourself.

If you look at the overhead spaces you have to work with in a galley kitchen you can consider your options there as well. If there are any empty spaces you could put shelves up higher in the kitchen to add to the storage space. The layout of a galley kitchen can be a challenge but you can do it. You could also hire an interior designer if you wanted to get some help creating your design.
