"I've returned to the Third Era around a year after I left. Gareth has relit the Dragonfires and taken control of the Empire. The Knights are being persecuted and minority races are being enslaved. Sir Thedret is leading the rebellion against Gareth from a hideout in Fort Nikel."
Ask Dreekius about "Important news" to catch up on events and then leave Vanua.
When you break the surface of the water, your log updates.
"I've exited Vanua and should try to locate Naomi's body before looking for the rest of the Knights of the Nine. With luck, the Adabal has not been taken."
Credit: Lanceor/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdCredit: Lanceor/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdThere is a substantial bounty on your head - 10,000 gold - and the Imperial Legion will try and arrest you if you are seen. Although you are given the options to either Surrender or to Resist Arrest, you are going to have to resist, as surrendering just leads to your automatic execution for treason, so don't go anywhere that you could face large numbers of troops when resisting. Make your way to Fanacasecul and, outside the now-ruined Ayleid complex, are items from the throne room. Look until you find the skeleton of Naomi.

Take the Adabal from Naomi's body and your log will update.
"I've taken the Adabal from around Naomi's neck. There's no indication of how I might use it to stop Gareth but I seem to feel Naomi's presence whenever I'm touching it. I should rendezvous with the Knights of the Nine at Fort Nikel now."
Credit: Lanceor/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdAlso in the area are all six pieces of Sotha Sil's armour and the sword Trueflame, which Gareth was carrying at the very beginning, all a bit the worse for wear now. After taking the Adabal, go to Fort Nikel to meet up with the rest of the Order. Once there, Sir Thedret approaches you and tells you his plans.
"Sir Thedret's plan is to attack the southern side of the Imperial City so that I can sneak in to the Market District via Imperial Sewer System. I should let Sir Thedret know once I am ready."
Credit: Lanceor/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdWhen ready to start the assault on the city, tell him to begin the briefing, and he will now outline how the attack on the Imperial City will proceed. Once the briefing is finished, the attack will start.
"Sir Thedret is now leading the Knights of the Nine to the Imperial City. I should make my way to the North Exit of the Imperial Sewer System to sneak into the Market District."
SCredit: Lanceor/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC Ltdir Thedret gives you Imperial Sewer Map, North Tunnel. Now make your way to the sewers on the north side of City Isle and go through them to the exit to the Market District. Don't exit the sewers yet.
"Credit: Lanceor/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdI've reached the exit to the Market District. I should wait for the message that the attack has started before leaving the sewers."
Credit: Lanceor/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdWait a bit and a messenger from the Knights will approach you.
"A runner has informed me that the battle has started. I should quickly head to the Imperial Palace to confront Gareth."
Now exit the sewers.
"The battle should have started already. It's possible that something has happened to the runner that Sir Thedret sent. Perhaps I should peek into the Market District and investigate."
This is the most dangerous part of the quest. Head towards to the Council Chambers in the Tower of White Gold. You will encounter Aurorans and Ayleid Soldiers on the way as you approach the entrance to White Gold Tower.
"Gareth is using Oblivion gates to summon Auroran reinforcements! The Knights of the Nine will be overwhelmed unless I stop Gareth soon."
In the chambers, High Chancellor Ocato is being held captive. Kill the Aurorans and Ayleid Soldiers guarding him, and he will tell you that Gareth is in the Temple of the One.
"I've freed Chancellor Occato from house arrest, but he's told me that Gareth is at the Temple of the One where the Knights are holding a defensive position. I must head there before more guards arrive."
Credit: Lanceor/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdMake your way to the Temple of the One; there are more Aurorans and Ayleid Soldiers on the way there, being transported in by Gareth using Oblivion Gates.
"The situation is deteriorating rapidly. Sir Thedret's defensive perimeter has collapsed under the weight of the Auroran onslaught. The operation has degenerated into a chaotic melee and the Knights are fighting for their lives. I must stop Gareth quickly!"
In the Temple the rest of the Knights attempt to attack Gareth but are paralyzed by him.
"The powers from Gareth's false Amulet of Kings are protecting him and he appears to be invulnerable to all damage! There must be a way to break his immunity. Perhaps his powers are related to the Dragonfires?"
Wear Naomi's Adabal and enter the Dragonfires.
"Upon presenting Naomi's Adabal to the Dragonfires, it released a burst of energy and shattered in my hand."
Credit: Lanceor/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdNaomi appears, kneels in the centre of the Dragonfires, then rises into the air and light streams from her Adabal, and then she disappears. Lightning strikes everywhere, finally knocking Gareth down.
"I can't explain what just happened... I saw Naomi praying at the Dragonfires before ascending to the heavens. I don't know if she was a vision, an apparition or if it was really her. A fierce lightning storm then erupted inside the Temple, putting out the Dragonfires and knocking Gareth to the ground."
Gareth launches a diatribe against you, and then attacks. You now have to kill him, and at least Credit: Lanceor/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC Ltdnow you can actually attack him, but be careful, he is quite dangerous. Once he is dead, your quest log updates.
"Gareth of Silvenar has been defeated. As the fall of White Gold Tower in 1E 243 marked the end of slavery under Ayleid rule, today marks the end of tyranny under a modern-day Ayleid warlord."
This ends the quest. Sir Thedret approaches you. It doesn't make much difference which conversation you select.
Credit: Lanceor/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdWhen you exit the Temple, you see a crowd of cheering people and Knights. Chancellor Ocato will then approach you and offers you the title of Commander of South Cyrodiil and will explain the duties and benefits.
Once you have accepted, this will start the quest The Castle of the Nine.
