When the three quests Arkay the Enemy, Infernal Alchemy and Exhuming Power are completed, whether on the Lich path or not, for the Skyrim plugin Undeath, Scourg Barrow will start.

Scourg Barrow

Scourg Barrow originally appeared in the second Elder Scrolls game, Daggerfall, and some parts may seem familiar to those who have played that game. Once the last of the three quests Arkay the Enemy, Exhuming Power and Infernal Alchemy is completed, your log will update.

Search the chief Necromancer's body at whichever location you are currently at, whether this is Gundar, Wynestra or Selonius the Apothecary. This cannot be done until the three quests are complete. Once they are, one of the bodies will have Orders and Barrows of the Mountains.

"From a note I found on the body of a Necromancer, I have learned that their leader, Antioch, has traveled deep into the Dragontail Mountains in search of an ancient crypt known as 'Scourg Barrow'. He believes that he is closer than ever to the forbidden secrets he is searching for. I should hurry to the Dragontail Mountains myself, and put a stop to him before he finds what he is looking for."

Fast travel to the mountains then follow the path through them.

"I have arrived at a frigid cliffisde trail, deep in the peaks of the Dragontail Mountains. An ancient crypt known as 'Scourg Barrow' is allegedly hidden here, where the Necromancer Antioch is attempting to unearth dark and forbidden knowledge. I should seek it out and put a stop to him."

Scourg BarrowCredit: Antioch/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdThere is only one way to go and along the way you will encounter various cold monsters until you arrive at Scourg Barrow. Outside the Barrow, ten ambush Skeletons of different types will appear and attack, unless you manage to successfully Sneak past them.

The Entry Lever in Scourg BarrowCredit: Antioch/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdEnter Scourg Barrow and at the far end of the entry room is a Lever. Activating it will result in the lid coming off the coffin next to it, revealing a shaft. The Barrow itself is occupied by various Skeletons, many of which attack from ambush, Necromancers, an Ancient Lich and some Frost Trolls. Once in Scourg Barrow, you can just kill Antioch and then leave, although you can also kill the other Necromancers and undead found in the barrow, including the Ancient Lich, and loot the place. If, however, you are going to do the ritual yourself, you will need to enter Apocrypha from the barrow.

"I have entered the ancient crypt known as Scourg Barrow. The Necromancer Antioch is undoubtedly in the depths of these forgotten catacombs, seeking its forbidden secrets. I should find him and put a stop to his search personally."

Drop into Scourg BarrowCredit: Antioch/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdDrop down the revealed shaft - you cannot exit the Barrow this way, so it's a good idea to ensure that you have all you need before entering - and you arrive in a small chamber that contains two ambush Skeletons. There is another shaft through a doorway leading down from this room; drop down that one as well, where this a dead Skeleton next to a Knapsack at the bottom of the shaft. Follow the tunnel from the shaft's bottom east and then south, where you will come to a room with some collapsed exits in the south wall.

Head west from this room and you will enter the north end of a ruined hall. At the south end of this hall, some stairs lead up to the east. At the top of the stairs is another large hallway with several exits. There are two ambush Skeletons in niches on the walls, and a Necromancer in a room entered by a door in the southern wall. A passage leads down to the northeast, and there is another door in the northern wall. Go through this last door into a small area with a dead Skeleton and a dead Draugr with a door to the northwest. Go through this door into a square room with a door in the north wall, one in the east wall, and two in the west. Go through the north door into a passage that ends in another door. Alternatively, if you want to get one of the Jewelled Skull Idols needed to gain access to the lair of the Ancient Lich, do this diversion first.

Go through the southernmost door in the western wall and follow the passage, going through another door and then down some stairs, continuing past a door in the south wall which opens into a room containing coffins, and continue to follow the stairs down to the bottom and you will come to a door in the western wall. There is also one in the eastern wall a bit further along which opens into a room with a Necromancer and some loot.

On the west wall of this room, near to the rack, is a Chain. Using this opens a secret compartment in the wall, containing a Jewelled Skull Idol, as well as en empty Black Soul Gem and a Steel Dagger of Soul Snares. Also in the room on the bloodstained table is a useful book, and this is the only occurrence of it, Corpse Preparation, Volume Three, which is one of three books required to add a new perk, Efficiency. Now return back up the stairs and through the passage to the square room.

Head west to the end of the constructed area, where there is a melee Skeleton and an ambush Skeleton in a niche in the southern wall. From here, follow the tunnel downwards as it heads roughly north, then roughly east, until it comes to a junction with one passage heading in a northerly direction, and the other southerly. From the junction, follow the tunnel as it heads deeper in southerly direction.

To get the second Jewelled Skull Idol, you can take another diversion here. Follow the tunnel that leads north, then up some stairs to a hallway containing several coffins. Just before the hallway comes to an end, there is a door in the north-eastern wall.

The Chain Next to the CoffinCredit: Antioch/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdJewelled Skull IdonCredit: Antioch/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdGo through this door to enter a partially collapsed chamber with a Necromancer, an ambush Skeleton, and a bed with a Chest at its foot. In the southwest corner, next to an upright open Coffin, is a Chain on the wall. Using this opens a secret compartment on the southeast wall containing a Jewelled Skull Idol, as well as Spell Tome: Decay, which teaches the new spell, Decay, and two Black Soul Gems, one empty, one containing a Grand Soul. Once the second idol has been collected, return to the junction again and head south as mentioned earlier.

The passage leads into a constructed area where there are two Necromancers casting magic, with no effect, at an energy barrier protecting a door to the southeast. To each side of the barrier is a Pedestal which takes a Jewelled Skull Idol and the door provides access to the Ancient Lich. Once past the Necromancers, continue through the doorway at the southwest end, go down the stairs into a cavern area and head southwest.

To defeat the Ancient Lich, you must first remove the energy barrier protecting the door to its lair, which requires two Jewelled Skull Idols that will have been taken if the two diversions have been followed. Place each idol in each pedestal, and the energy barrier will disappear. Enter the chamber, and the Ancient Lich is at the southern end. There are five dead Skeletons in the room which the Lich will reanimate to attack.

Ancient LichCredit: Antioch/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdThis can be a dangerous battle, and you should be adequately prepared first. If you have good Sneak and Archery skills, one option is to climb on the rubble pile at the north-western end of the chamber, and snipe any enemies from there. Standing at the very top will take you out of the line of sight of the Ancient Lich, and with good Sneak, it may well not be able to find you. Otherwise, resistance to magic is definitely going to help.

White SarcophagusCredit: Antioch/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdOnce the lich is dead, loot the White Stone Sarcophagus. One of the items in there is Spell Tome: Mass Reanimate, which teaches the new spell, Mass Reanimate. After this, go back out into the corridor and continue down the stairs to the southwest as previously mentioned.

Before you arrive at the end of this cave - where there is a Chest and a dead Skeleton - there is a passage in the north-western wall. Follow this to a  large chamber with a tent in the north-eastern area and a Cooking Pot in the centre. There are four Necromancers, one of whom is a boss, and a melee and missile Skeleton in this area. This can be one of the most dangerous encounters in the barrow, as you are outnumbered, so make sure you are well prepared. Stealth is useful here, so that you can pick them off one at a time. There is a Chest inside the tent, as well as other loot around the cave.

Opened WallCredit: Antioch/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdChainCredit: Antioch/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdTake the passage west from the cave and follow it around to the north, then up some stairs into a ruined paved area with a wooden door in the west wall at the north end of the chamber. Go through the door into a square room with a table and shelves on the west wall. Behind the table there is a Chain on the wall; pull this, and the west wall just to the north of the Chain will open. Go through this opening and enter into a cave with an exit in the west wall. Go through this exit into a wider cave that, before the western end, has a tunnel in the south wall of it.

AntiochCredit: Antioch/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdFollow this tunnel until you arrive in a cave with a table and shelves along the south wall. On the table is the Conjuration skill book, The Doors of Oblivion. Take the tunnel that leaves the cave in the northern wall, and follow it upwards until you arrive at the western side of a large room. Antioch is on a raised area at the eastern end of the chamber with several tables. There are two Skeletons guarding him. Kill Antioch. Once you have killed him, the quest will update.

"Antioch is defeated, and his artifacts and knowledge now lie in my possession, thus ending the threat to Skyrim. The secrets that he was searching for in these catacombs may still lie within, however..."

ChainCredit: Antioch/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdThe Opened WallCredit: Antioch/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdThis completes this quest, and the series, unless you are pursuing the path to lichdom yourself. You can now leave the Barrow if desired. To do so, exit Antioch's chamber using the tunnel to the east. Follow it around and up until you reach a dead end. At the northern end of this room, on the western wall, is a Chain which opens the Wall to the north.

Go through this and you will enter another cave with a Necromancer and a Skeleton. In the northern wall of this cave is another tunnel, marked by ice. Go north through this and follow the path, which will bring you to an area with a small room to the east, with a Frost Troll and a dead Necromancer, as well as a Chest. The passage itself continues to the northwest. This continues into a large cave with several ore veins and another Frost Troll. The western end of this cave curves to the north, leading to an exit which will bring you out around the rear of the Barrow. You can now fast travel out of the mountains. There is another exit from this cave to the south, which should be followed if you plan on becoming a lich (see later).

Before doing so, you may wish to defeat the Ancient Lich and get the unique spellbook from his sarcophagus, collect Corpse Preparation, Volume Three, and continue the path to lichdom yourself, if you have chosen the requisite results from the earlier quests, if you haven't done any of these earlier.

Arkay the EnemyCredit: Antioch/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC LtdSNecromancer's NoteCredit: Antioch/Bethesda Softworks/eGDC Ltdhould you be intending to try the Lich ritual yourself, after killing Antioch, follow the path towards the exit as mentioned earlier, but instead of heading to the exit to the north in the cave with the second Frost Troll, use the passageway south.

This will bring you out into a larger cave, where there is a brazier with a pillar bearing the book Arkay the Enemy in front of it, and a grate that cannot be opened in the north wall of the cave. There is also a Necromancer in the chamber. On his body is the Necromancer's Note which suggests that the brazier needs an offering of the enemy to be made to it. The book makes it clear who the enemy is; the bowl requires the Priest of Arkay's Heart as an offering.

The brazier will light and a hidden rock door will open to the south.

Activate it, then go back up the passage to the room with the brazier and the gate will now be opened. Go through this gate and go up the stairs to the final room where there is the Black Book: Whispers of the Veil on a stand. Read the book - note: before doing this, ensure that you will not be over encumbered by the book, otherwise you can lose access to the character menus in Apocrypha, making it impossible to play - and, after a cut scene, you will be transported to Apocrypha and the quest Black Book: Whispers of the Veil will start.
