The Facts On Porcelain Crowns

By | Jun 1, 2010 | 1 Comments | Rating: 0

Often to prevent problematic dental situations from occurring or worsening, porcelain crowns are used. Though they do not come with a small price tag, they are well worth it for many reasons.

Originally, crowns were crafted with a metal base that was crafted as the foundation for the porcelain that would later be applied. Patients fitted with metal based crowns found that a black line would form on the gum line. For obvious reasons, many felt self conscious because of this unwanted effect. Dentists noticed this and incorporated into the new style crowns, a seamless bond. In other words, the crown appeared as natural as the rest of their teeth. With advancements in dental technology and efficiency, metal was removed entirely from the equation.

Today's crowns are crafted completely from pure porcelain. These newer models offer a more realistic alternative to previous types. To further enhance the realism of the dental product, porcelain can easily be dyed to match the existing teeth of the patient. Besides alterations in color, the shape could also easily be modified. Just like the fingerprints of a person, each tooth is unique to the individual. Dentists strive to create crowns that mimic the existing set of teeth.

As with all products, this too has its disadvantages. Though appearance wise, porcelain crowns easily outmatch its predecessor, they are not as resistant. Crowns made with a combination of metal and porcelain had a more lasting fixture. Though newer crowns are not as strong, they will serve you just as well with perhaps a few more trips to the dentist for check ups and maintenance.

As with most improved products, there is a higher price. Many consider it well worth the investment not only for its improved function, but for its physical appearance as well. Most would gladly pay extra for a product that is proven to outperform its older version.

An argument that has been posed on the price increase of porcelain crowns is that the total cost is not solely placed on the dental product. Some feel that this style of crown is actually closer to its older model's original price and the cost has only risen due to differences in how the procedure is handled. Once labor by staff members is factored in as well as the use of newer technology, the price actually seems quite accurate.

Ceramic porcelain crowns have gained much attention over the years for their improved function as well as their more natural structure. Though some might say the cost is too high, many disagree and wholeheartedly support this product.

Good info on porcelain crowns, getting rid of the metal used years ago is a very good idea.
