The Fairmont Orchid Hotel: One of the Best Family Resorts in Hawaii

By Edited Aug 20, 2014 2 5

The Big Island of Hawaii is One of Our Favorite Places to Visit

The Fairmont Orchid Hotel is one of my family's favorite places to stay on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is a luxurious resort with beautiful beaches, great snorkeling, a fabulous spa to pamper you, activities for the whole family and much more.

Whether you are looking for a fun family vacation spot, or a location for a tropical wedding and/or honeymoon, this hotel is the perfect location.

Big Island of Hawaii

Hawaii: The Big Island

The Big Island of Hawaii is one of the more fascinating areas to visit in the United States. While there, you can drive up to the snow-capped mountaintop of Mauna Kea in the winter, or take a helicopter ride over tropical rainforests, spectacular waterfalls and an erupting volcano. You can also walk over the cooled lava beds, or go snorkeling or scuba diving in the Pacific Ocean. If you stay on the Big Island for a few days, you will want to be sure to drive around, because there is a lot to see on this spectacular island. Once, when we were returning to our hotel after eating at a mountain restaurant, we were treated to the unforgettable sight of a vivid rainbow cast in the light from a full moon. Breathtaking!

No visit to the Big Island would be complete without seeing the erupting volcano. You can either arrange for a helicopter tour, which our family loved, or you can take the three hour drive to Volcanoes National Park. Either way, you can see the current lava flow, which is a once in a lifetime experience!

The Fairmont Orchid Hotel

The Fairmont Orchid Hotel and Resort is located on 32 acres along the Kohala Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. It has its own white sand lagoon which is perfect for snorkeling. While staying there, watch for the Green Sea Turtles that bask on the shore most afternoons. The Orchid Beachboys will also help you take part in other activities, such as paddling an outrigger canoe, hiking through the largest petroglyph field in the Pacific, and more.

The rooms at the Orchid are tranquil, and luxurious. The rooms have either ocean or mountain views … and both are spectacular. There are 540 guest rooms and suites at the hotel. Each room has a private lanai with a view of the gardens or an angled ocean view. Your room also comes with all the typical amenities you would expect at a luxury resort including bathrobes, in-room safe, refrigerator, Keurig One Cup Coffee Makers, 42" flat screen TV's, high speed internet, and much more.

The Orchid has four restaurants, including a casual deli, a breakfast buffet, an oceanfront restaurant and a sushi restaurant. There are many other restaurants in the area to choose from, as well.

The Fairmont Orchid's Children's Program

You can feel comfortable bringing your children along, as there is plenty for them to do. The Orchid has a year-round children's program for children ages 5 through 12, which is handy for those times when you need someone else to care for them. The program is licensed by the State of Hawaii. Some of the adventures that your children may engage in are visiting the petroglyph field, exploring a lava tube cave, going on a fish and shark tour, exploring the tide pools, or going on a Gecko hunt. The children will also have a chance to enjoy time in the free-form swimming pool and play on surfboards at the beach. All the counselors are First Aid/CPR certified. The children can participate from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., which is perfect if you want to enjoy a round of golf, or go shopping without the kids. The fee for the day includes lunch and a snack for the kids.

In the evenings, the kids will also enjoy going with you to visit other areas of the island, or you can all relax and swim either at the pool or at the beach. Don't forget to explore the nearby towns, like charming Kona, where you can eat at local restaurants or visit all the cute shops. Kona is about a 45 minute drive from the resort. The entire family may also want to explore Waimea, which is home to cattle, cowboys and ranches. In fact, it is the location of the Parker Ranch, which is one of the largest and oldest ranches in the United States. The Parker Ranch has a visitor center, and a variety of activities such as horseback riding, and ATV rides. One evening during your stay, you may also want to take the kids to see the "Gathering of the Kings," a Polynesian feast and dance performance. It is held on Saturday evenings at the Plantation Estate by the Fairmont Orchid.

The Fairmont Orchid Spa without Walls

If you use the Orchid Spa, you will have the opportunity to get massages by the ocean, and be pampered while enjoying fresh ocean breezes. The spa has both waterfall massage huts, as well as oceanfront massage cabanas. It also contains a full salon and 24 hour fitness center.

Sports at the Fairmont Orchid

The Orchid has a 10,000 square foot swimming pool and 10 plexipave tennis courts for your enjoyment, so bring along your tennis racquets. If you prefer golf, there are a number of golf courses in the surrounding area, including a 36 hole golf course right on the resort grounds. Ask the concierge you help you arrange tee times.

Weddings at the Fairmont Orchid

The Fairmont Orchid is a spectacular place to have a wedding. They have wedding planners on staff to help you plan the wedding of your dreams. There are gorgeous waterfalls and beautiful ocean views at the resort. You have a choice of both indoor and outdoor wedding venues to choose from, and the wedding planners will coordinate everything for you. Outdoors, you can be married at Turtle Pointe, the Coconut Grove, the Courtyard Lanai, or many other spots at the resort. Indoors, there are several elegant ballrooms to choose from, depending on the size of your group. For example, the Grande Ballroom can hold up to 1120 people. The Plaza Ballroom can seat up to 90, and can even be split into three rooms for smaller groups. Whatever size wedding you are planning, The Fairmont Orchid can probably accommodate you.

The Fairmont Orchid has an in-house florist to take care of your flower arrangements. You can also hold a wedding reception there for a large group, or choose a romantic dinner for two in a secluded area. In addition, the hotel bakeshop can create a lovely wedding cake in a variety of sizes and flavors to meet your needs.

After the wedding, you can add a "Make Room for Romance" Turndown Amenity to your hotel package for about $125. If you choose this, you will receive special services such as orchid petals trailed from your guest room door to the bed, slippers and bathrobes placed near the bed, special bath crystals and bath gels, floating candles in the bathroom, champagne, chocolate-dipped strawberries, and more. What a lovely way to celebrate your wedding or honeymoon!

I love Hawaii. Of all the places I've traveled, she is my favorite destination. My parents and I cruised to Hawaii, and we docked at Kona and Hilo. We took a tour of Volcanoes National Park. As much as I love to cruise, one of the drawbacks is the short time you are docked at each port. Someday, it would be fun to travel to Hawaii and just stay for a while. Thanks for sharing your review of the Fairmont Orchid Hotel.

I feel relaxed just reading about this fabulous place. Like Jeni10, my family cruised to Hawaii, and it was a wonderful way to get an overview. A return visit is on our to-do list. Thanks for sharing.
