The Finest Music Venues in Americas Finest City
On any given night, there are probably hundreds of bands performing live in San Diego. Whether you have been waiting for a national band to go on tour in this area, or just ready for a night out with some live music, San Diego has the venues. Some of the bigger venues that host national tours as well as smaller bands really are the best of both worlds. Your best bet is to check out local event calendars online.
The Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre is the largest venue in the immediate San Diego vicinity. Seating about 20,000, Cricket Wireless is hosting such names as Thrice and Underoath this season in its outdoor amphitheatre. The Viejas Arena Concerts in the Park is a little smaller, fitting about 12,000 guests. They recently hosted a very successful Pearl Jam show that opened with Ben Harper.
One of the smaller venues that hosts big names in the area is the House of Blues, which is downtown. It's a relatively new venue but hosts some popular national tours such as the Long Island favorite Brand New. With their moderately sized venue, and their reputation gaining steam, they often have to add extra days of shows because of how quickly the original dates sell out.
Another new and successful venue is the Hard Rock Hotel, which is right between Petco Park and the Convention Center in the Gaslamp Quarter. Though it is a corporately owned chain, the Hard Rock has been hosting big and small name bands to rival the local favorites as well as the big guys.
Up the coast in Solana Beach is the Belly Up Tavern. San Diego music live at the Belly Up is a local favorite and hosts some unknown local bands as well as national tours. The interior is mostly wood which gives off a great tavern vibe. Additionally, their shows are usually pretty inexpensive. If you are interested in enjoying the cool evenings, Humphreys by the Bay seats 1,300 in their outdoor venue. The view overlooking the bay is a really nice touch.
