Many people are quite desperate to lose weight fast, so they will try all of the fad diets and gimmicks available, only to become frustrated with the lack of measurable results. Most diets that are extremely low in calories will produce fast weight loss, but prove to be only a temporary solution and is often the result of water loss. At some point, the individual becomes too hungry and weak to sustain the restrictions. After giving up, he or she will likely regain all of the lost weight and possibly even more. Common examples of these fads are the HCG diet and Cleanse diet (also known by other names).

Fad Diets Work at First, Then...

Furthermore, the plan requires the person to restrict calories. It leads one to wonder if it is the hormone or calorie restriction that is responsible in inducing weight loss in the first place. With so many side effects, this is hardly a worthwhile method.

The GM diet is another fad promoted by General Motos (yes, the car company) that requires extreme calorie restriction. It may work on the short term, but it does not provide enough nutrients for any adult to safely sustain the plan. It is a method to quickly drop weight but not to keep it off. Starving usually leads to binging and relapse. It will eventually signal the body to stop burning fat, as well. The body slows its metabolism in order to maintain basic functions like breathing and circulation.

Therefore, the best way to safely lose weight is to modify unhealthy eating habits. When a person makes permanent, reasonable changes to his or her diet, the results are long lasting. This is because they do not feel starved or deprived.

The Welcomed Solution to Many

The Paleo Diet is a nutrition program inspired by the natural foods eaten by the hunter gatherer tribes that lived in the Paleolithic era. These people survived and stayed lean by eating what their bodies actually needed. They ate meat, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and seafoods. On the Paleo Diet, one eats natural, whole foods. There were no processed foods or refined sugars back in the days of our ancestors. They were able to get all of the nutrition they required from the land and from hunting.

The Paleo diet has a lot of protein as well as fruits and veggies, while it is higher in healthy fats than most low-carb programs. The foods on this plan are low on the glycemic index, which means they do not cause the body to produce too much insulin, a hormone that encouraged fat storage in the body. Paleo eating promises to lower blood sugar, insulin, and triglycerides that lead to clogged arteries. The downside of this plan is that dairy and breads are eliminated from it. There are many nutrients in the authorized foods to replace what may be lost from these two groups, but for someone who is not ready to give up milk and grain products, it is not a practical choice. Anyone who is interested in this plan can find numerous recipes and resources on the Internet.

Fad diets are not a long term solution for weight loss. A person must change unhealthy behaviors to solve weight issues permanently. Some plans, like the Paleo diet, work on the long term for certain people, but they need to be practical and sustainable for the individual. A person must feel satisfied in order to stick with the new lifestyle, and any severe deprivation will not fulfill this goal.
