Health Benefits of Superfruits

The Superfruit is a recently developed term used to describe fruits exhibiting extraordinary health benefits and properties. The term "superfruit" originated back in 2005 from the food and beverage industry, as a marketing strategy where the fruits where specifically designed to meet health needs of customers. Superfruits are often included in ingredients in cosmetics, foods or energy drinks and dietary supplements. The term superfruit refers to a broad base of fruits, but there are no true scientific studies or data available to support their health benefits through studies.

Superfruits include blueberries, acai berries, guarana, pomegranate, red grapes, cranberries and the wildly popular Goji berries. These fruits along with apples, oranges and tomatoes seem to exhibit extra special health benefits when used as dietary supplements for their nutritional value. For example, the Acai berry includes omega fatty acids and dietary fiber as well as helpful antioxidants. Pomegranate, Blueberries and Cranberries all contain vitamin C, which is quite helpful for the immune system. Wolfberries, more commonly known as Goji berries, contain riboflavin, dietary fiber and important antioxidants. They've been used in use with neurological disorders and some therapists even prescribe them as an alternative medication for anti-depression, increased energy and more restful sleep. The Goji berries health benefits when ingested daily can be quite powerful and beneficial to the immune system.

The reason Superfruits are marketed to the mass is their health benefits, most especially their antioxidant benefits. Antioxidants are the molecules that aid our cells in recovery, and keep our immune system free of cell breakdown. Oxidate stress may play an important part in how many human diseases form, and ingesting foods high in antioxidants may be a generally good health practice for people to practice preventitive health care. These simple modifications in diet can save people money in the long run due to less hospital or doctor visits and less medications and treatments. However, keep in mind these Superfruits are still under study and examination, so they should never trump the advice presented by your doctor or family physician.

While there are no proven studies of the health benefits of these superfruits, there is evidence suggesting it's a constantly growing multi-billion dollar industry. It has been predicted that this healthful superfruit industry could rake in about $10 billion by 2011. Currently, Pomegranates, Cranberries, Grapes and Mango have seen high commercial success, while Goji berries and Acai berries are emerging in the market, and have been featured on television shows including Oprah Winfrey's daytime show.

I always make sure to eat very healthy. Mangosteen juice as well as Spirulina powder are both supposed to be super nutritious also. Thanks for all of the great info.
