The Beginning

In December 1891 basketball was invented by Canadian YMCA instructer James Naismith. Naismith thought of and created basketball so his students at the School for Christian Workers had some kind of sport to play indoors during the winter. The first game was played with a soccer ball, using two peach baskets as hoops. At this time teams had nine players, and the game was played using Naismith's thirteen rules. Soon basketball was becoming more popular and rapidly spreading across the nation.
