Italy and Germany have won a total of seven World Cups between them. As such, there have been a number of Italy V Germany games in the FIFA World Cup and European Championships. There have been a total of 10 games played out between them, not including friendly international matches.

The first time they played was in the 1962 FIFA World Cup. Then the Germans and Italians played in the same opening group. Their game ended as a 0 - 0 stalemate, but it was a better result for the Germans. As the Italians finished third it was a game they had to win, whilst the German team still topped the table.

Their next meeting in the FIFA World Cup, the 1970 semifinals, was a classic game. There weren't too many goals during the regular 90 minutes, with Italy gaining an early lead. That goal seemed enough to secure victory until a late German equalizer ensured the match went into extra-time.

During extra-time there was a glut of goals. Muller was on the mark to put the Germans 2 - 1 up, but minutes later Italy pulled the score back to 2 - 2. Riva made it 3 - 2 to Italy before Muller struck again. The lead lasted little longer than a minute as an unmarked Rivera scored from a fine cross into the box. That goal made it 4 - 3 to the Italians, and was enough to ensure victory. A plaque at the Azteca stadium states, "The Azteca Stadium pays homage to the National Teams of Italy (4) and Germany (3), who starred in the 1970 FIFA World Cup, the 'Game of the Century' June 17th, 1970."

The Italians and Germans played again in Buenos Aires during the 1978 cup. Then it was in the second group stage. There were no goals in that match. As Italy pipped Germany to second spot, the game ensured their place in the next round.

In 1982, a Italy made it to the World Cup final. They had beaten a dazzling Brazil team 3 - 2 in an earlier game, which had provided the Azzurri with considerable momentum. West Germany had also booked their place in the final after a thrilling clash with France in the semis.

After a goalless first half Italy went in front in the second. Rossi scored the first goal of this match when he headed the ball home from close range. Rossi made it two with a fine strike from just outside the Germany penalty box. Then the Italians made it three when the ball was played to Altobelli completely unmarked within the center of Germany's penalty box. The Italian turned the keeper and slotted the ball into the net to seal victory. One German goal soon after left the final score Italy 3 - Germany 1.

In 1988, the Italians and Germans were in the same European Championship group. In that match the Italians took the lead soon after the interval. Although Germany quickly equalized, and the score remained 1 - 1. After that game both teams finished in the top two of the table.

At Euro '96 both Italy and Germany were among the favorites to lift the trophy. The Italians missed a penalty that would have secured their place in the last eight. As the match ended 0 - 0 the Germans went through to lift the trophy, whilst the Italians went out.

In Germany, the German team came up against Italy in the semifinals of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Most within the stadium were cheering on the home team. It was another absorbing match between the two teams, although it remained goalless at the end of the 90 minutes. In the final minutes of extra-time Italy scored from the right side of Germany's penalty box. Minutes later it was 2 - 0 to Italy, and there was no way back for Germany.

The most recent clash between the Germans and Italians came at Euro 2012. In a blistering first half, the Italians scored twice to establish a two goal lead at the interval. After halftime Germany did not score until a penalty was given to them in the final minutes. That was duly converted, but they did not score a crucial second that would have taken the match into extra-time. Thus, the Italians celebrated victory once more.

Overall, they have played a total of 31 games. In the big games at the World Cup and European Championships the Italians have much the better record, and have not been defeated by the Germans. However, in less significant friendly games the Germans have won several matches against Italy.
