The History of Internet Marketing

When I first started my very first internet business in 1998 the internet was very different from what it is today – hey I don't feel so bad, even Google was only started in 1996! The world of internet marketing has changed dramatically since then and so I thought I would take a trip down memory lane and consider all the many changes that have taken place in the last few years.

Google – From Garage Business to Number One Internet Marketing Topic Worldwide

According to the Wikipedia's History of Google 'Google began in March 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, PhD. Students at Stanford working on the Stanford Digital Library Project.' From a research projects for a couple of students in 1996 to the greatest website worldwide today, Google has truly done some amazing changes in these past 12 years and of course an integral part of the history of internet marketing has been the development of search engine optimization.

Email Marketing

Today people know a lot more about email marketing than they did in 1998 and I often wish that I had understood half of what I understand today back then – if I had maybe my life would be very different today. Email marketing is still an important part of internet marketing and it is important to know how to use it – creating squeeze pages, signing people up to your list, and sending out good quality email newsletters are all aspects of this.

Bye Bye Static, Hello Social Media

One of the latest developments in the history of internet marketing is the development of social media and it seems that what Google was twelve years ago Facebook is over-taking today. Facebook, like Google, started at college by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004 and today has thousands of members and in the area of social ads is definitely giving Google a run for their money so to speak. It is websites like these that are changing our perception of the internet – whereas it was once a very static concept today it is becoming more and more social and interactive. This is also changing the way we market on the internet as internet marketers are realizing the importance of being where the people are and being social to make money.

These are just a fraction of the changes that have affected internet marketers over the past twelve years. The truth is that the internet has changed radically and will continue to change and evolve. In my opinion the one change that internet marketers need to be most aware of at the moment is the last one mentioned – social media marketing. If you are not yet using this method of internet marketing, don't get left behind!
