The Importance of Baseball Workouts

By Edited Mar 3, 2016 0 0

Are you a high school baseball player looking to make the team or just improve your baseball skills?  If so, you really need to concentrate on your baseball workouts and make sure you are doing everything you can to be the best player you can be.  So what baseball workouts should you be doing?  And how often should you do them?  These are all questions I will be answering in this article.

Baseball workouts are simply a combination of fitness drills, baseball specific drills, and training and conditioning exercises to make yourself a better baseball player.  These activities must be done often and on a regular basis in order to be effective.  They also need to be adjusted to your age and ability level.  You don't want to be doing T ball drills in high school!  The first thing you need to do is come up with your baseball workouts plan.  Very similar to baseball practice plans, a baseball workouts plan is designed to log what baseball training exercises you do and also to keep you accountable for doing them.  You should write down exactly what exercises you are going to do on what days and for how long.

The first part of your baseball workouts plan should be devoted to health and fitness.  In order to be a great baseball player you need to be very fit and healthy.  Of course there are obvious exceptions such as Prince Fielder and CC Sabathia, but they are the exception not the rule.  Generally baseball players are very fit.  In order to get your body in better shape you need to do a combination of aerobic exercises such as jogging or cycling and either weight training or pushups, crunches, and squats.  You also need to change your diet and remove and excess junk foods and drinks from your daily diet.  Always make sure that you talk with your doctor and/or sports trainer before changing your diet or exercise significantly.

The next part of your baseball workouts that you need to write down and plan is the actual drills you will be doing.  These drills should be position specific.  For example, if you are a pitcher than you shouldn't be taking very many fly balls.  Instead, you should be concentrating on your form and fielding your position.  All players should also spend a good deal of time focusing on their hitting and improving their swing.  You should see if your league or school has baseball pitching machines for you to train with, as they are very helpful.  If they don't and you have the money, you could always buy one from Baseball Warehouse.

Now that you have everything about your baseball workouts plan written down, it is time to put that into action.  Making a plan does nothing if you don't take action and actually eat healthy, exercise, and do your baseball drills.  Remember, in the end it all comes down to hard work.  You could have the nicest baseball cleats, or the best youth baseball bats, but if you don't work hard, none of that will matter.  It all comes down to who wants to be the best baseball player the most, and who will do whatever it takes to achieve that.  If you want it, you can do it.  You just have to work really hard on your baseball workouts and believe in yourself!
