The Importance of Consistency in Weight Loss and What to Do if you Slip Up!

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

I wanted to take some time to write about a topic which I think is the difference between success and failure in your mission to improve your health and lose weight : consistency.

Sounds simple right?

Well, in theory it should be. Take positive actions towards a healthier life on a regular basis and you will achieve your weight loss goals.

So why do so many of us fall at this hurdle?

I myself have fallen victim to going all out on a strict new diet or exercise plan, and then ruining all my hard work with a big night out drinking, or a huge meal, and then thinking it is all to hard so giving up, rather than getting straight back on track. It's only now that I have figured out this critical element that I have achieved my desired results.

Here are some tips for you to maintain your consistency:

1. Be Kind to Yourself. What you are aiming for is a long term improvement in your health, and body shape and size. You need to be realistic in your mind that you will have days where you do indulge in that extra serving of food or piece of chocolate, and days you don't go to the gym as planned. The key here is to acknowledge that is OK every now and then- you haven't failed! All you need to do is to pick straight back up at the next opportunity. Make your next meal a healthy one, and get straight back on plan.

2. Focus on the Long Term. Small actions each day over the long term will ensure you achieve results. Don't give up completely after one small failure. Remember that you are in it for a long time, not a good time, and focus on what you have achieved up til that point, and where you want to be long term.

3. Get Moving. Had a big meal? Get out for a walk or jog as soon as possible. Haven't been to the gym all week? Pack your bag and get going! Don't wait, don't put it off, break the cycle of eating badly and inactivity by moving, you will feel better for it and it will help find your motivation again.

Good luck, stay focused, and if you have a fail- it's OK- just get back on track immediately  Now! Go... do it!
