Although there are many different kinds of sheets available, percale sheets are always an excellent choice when shopping for good-looking and long-wearing bed linens. They stand up to washings and wear far better than other sheets and will stay looking good for far longer than other kinds of sheets. But what are percale sheets? What exactly does that mean?
Percale sheets are not a kind of
fabric. In fact, percale sheets can be
made from a wide variety of fabrics and in a wide range of colors and prints.
Percale simply refers to how the materiel is woven together.
Percale materiel is woven in such a way that each individual thread will cross over another individual thread. The result is a much firmer, tighter, and longer lasting fabric than other weaving methods. Some fabrics are woven in a way where one thread will cross over two or three or even four other threads. These will produce a very different kind of feeling to the fabric, but in most cases will not last as long as percale will. Sheets made from percale woven fabric have a crisp and firmer feel to them. That is not to say they will do not feel soft. After repeated washings, they will feel soft and a little "worn-in". However, they way they are woven creates a fabric that will last much longer than other kinds of weaves.
A person might easily think that the only kind of percale sheets available are made from cotton. However, due to the fact that percale refers to a manner of weaving fabric and not the makeup of the fabric itself, percale sheets are available in a wide range of materials, including cotton and polyester blends, cotton and linen blends, as well as Egyptian cotton, perhaps the best sheet match-up available.
As well as different materials, percale sheets are available in a wide range of colors and even woven patterns. The nature of percale means that as long as the pattern is woven together as opposed to printed on the sheet, percale pattern sheets will retain their unique pattern for far longer than other fabrics on the market today.
There are many options when it comes to buying sheets. Whole stores are dedicated to the selling of bed linens and they are filled to the brim with a dizzying array of fabrics, colors and prints. But if one is looking for a set of sheets that will be crisp comfortable long after other inferior fabrics have started to pill up or wrinkle incessantly, percale sheets will still be going strong. So the next time you think about buying sheets, take a serious look at percale sheets. One could do far worse.
