The London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League

By | Apr 25, 2011 | 1 Comments | Rating: 0

The London Knights entered the Ontario Hockey League (OHA at the time) for the 1965-66 season as the London Nationals. The team entered the league during the National Hockey League’s ‘Original 6’ era when junior teams were still sponsored by NHL clubs. For the first few years of their existence, the Nationals were affiliated with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

1968-69 marked the first season that the London franchise played under the Knights moniker. The team played out of the London Gardens (later renamed the Ice House) from the beginning. The Gardens were located on the edge of town, just off the 401 and were connected to a shopping mall. Although a basic steel and cinder block structure, the Gardens was a great, loud and intimate venue to watch a hockey game at.

The Robertson Cup is awarded each season to the playoff champion in the Ontario Hockey League. Over the team’s history, the London Knights have competed in the final series for the Robertson Cup on four different occasions but won only once, in 2005. London’s first trip to the finals was a close battle with the Ottawa 67’s in 1977. An overachieving Knights team did some giant killing to get to the 1999 final before bowing out to the Belleville Bulls. The Peterborough Petes did some giant killing themselves, taking down a heavily favoured London team in 2006.

In 2004-05, along with that Robertson Cup victory, the Knights also took home the Hamilton Spectator Trophy as the top regular season team in the OHL. They capped off that magical season by winning the Memorial Cup as Canadian champions in their home arena. The final game pitted London’s Corey Perry against Rimouski’s Sidney Crosby. Both, of course, have gone on to exceptional NHL careers. Corey Perry won the Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy for most goals in the NHL for the 2010-11 season as a member of the Anaheim Ducks. Sidney Crosby has won too numerous accolades in his young NHL career to mention here.

The Knights have left behind the London Gardens / Ice House for their new downtown home, the John Labatt Centre (JLC). The new arena seats 9,100 for hockey in a two level seating structure that looks like a mini version of an NHL rink. The original plan was to only open the lower bowl for hockey games and open the upper for special events, such as concerts. The Knights moved into the JLC in 2002 and have put 9,100 fans in the stands for most games since.
