The Magic of Vintage Rings

Antique Engagement Rings Have The Best Rocks

There’s something magical about Antique Engagement Rings. Like immortals watching over the ebbs and flows of our mortal love lives, if they could, they would tell tales of romance, proposals, and everlasting love. What we don’t know about a ring’s history only adds to the mystery. In some ways, it is difficult to explain the appeal of antique and vintage engagement rings, there is a very visceral attraction to them. The quality is all apparent, and yet sometimes difficult to put your finger on.

Quality
Antique rings tend to be handmade, and those that have survive this long have done so as a direct result of the quality of materials, and the good craftsmanship of the jeweller. Sure there will be scratches, and even chips in the stones, but this is a sign of a rich and illustrious life. Often these marks are not visible to the naked eye, and d not detract from the beauty of a ring. People worry too much about what they cannot see when it comes to buying diamond rings. When buying a new ring, it makes sense to haggle over the quality and want as much bang for your buck, because there is no romance in new rings. It’s a business exchange, buying the going rate for diamond and precious metal weight.

Individuality
If you buy antique, you buy unique. Whilst you will be able to find antique rings in the same style, it is unlikely that you will find two rings with the exact same design. A particular jeweller may have had a specific style, although because they were making them by hand, we’re talking in tens and not thousands of rings. Casting multiple rings from the same mold is a very modern thing. Today’s big name jewellers are producing hundreds of thousands of very similar rings to a global audience. To get a new one off ring, you’ll have to pay through the nose.

Ethics
If you are buying a new ring, you are going to have to go to great lengths to find one that is conflict free and fair trade. Even if a jeweller states that they know the origin of a diamond and it has a certificate, it is not a guarantee. There are very few jewellers working with fair trade gold, and none of these are household or designer names. It’s very expensive to ensure your new ring is fair trade and guaranteed conflict free. Vintage is green, fair trade, and completely ethical.

Where to Buy
Finding a genuine antique engagement ring is not always easy. If you go to an antique jewellers, you may find that you pay an extremely high price. Buying at auction has the risks of the item not being genuine, as auctions run on a buyer beware policy. You can bid on online auctions, although the chance of finding something that is not genuine is high. There are far more fakes on the market than genuine vintage pieces. Dealers, jewellers, and websites are all great places to buy vintage rings, however make sure that if you buy something, you can contact the seller tomorrow, and return the ring if you need to. If this is not an option, it is likely that you are not buying from a reputable source.
I hope that you found this article on choosing antique engagement rings useful.
