The Meaning of Faith

I Can Do All Things Through Christ Who Gives Me Strength

God is Heaven

Faith might be a word that is spoken often and used a lot in Christian churches, it might be a word used to describe belief in God or a "higher power."  Beyond that, what does faith really mean? Most people think they know what it means, a few people really understand it, yet not one of us actually practice it the way Jesus meant it in Mathew 17:20.  He said, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." And why shouldn't we have such faith? Hasn't The Almighty given us the Earth and the universe as a clear testament to His greatness and omnipotence?  Yet still we struggle, and we still succumb to fear.

Speaking of fear, "death" is always towards the top of the list for most common phobias in America.  Also of note, is that about three quarters of Americans identify themselves as Christians.  This would seem strange because of what believers in Christ have to look forward to immediately following their expiration.  However this simply helps to demonstrate the validity of Christ's implication that we, as people, have so little faith.  What is there to fear with death?  It is a phobia I do not understand since once we die, our faith in Christ will take us to Heaven - a place more amazing and beautiful than the greatest of human minds could ever begin to imagine.  The Bible tells us that Heaven is more incredible than the greatest experience we could ever have on this Earth, and the joy and fulfillment we will have shall be never-ending.

In Psalms 23:4 it reads, "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."  What that is saying is no matter where you are, even in the pits of the worst place on Earth physically or emotionally, God is there with you.  And in that awful place God tells us to be at peace.  Why?  Because he is with you!  When you have the Creator of Heaven and Earth and all the stars there by your side, what possible menace should ever give you cause to be afraid?!  It is really laughable to think of all the things we fear in life, when there is never ANY cause to be afraid.  To put it in perhaps more worldly terms, having God on your side against anything, is like having the entire US Military at your front against the threat of an earthworm.  Another verse along the same lines is Romans 8:31 which says in part, "If God is for us, who can be against us?"  Yet another is Psalm 118:6, "The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"  The answer to both rhetorical questions is "NOTHING."

Besides being a barrier to fear, faith allows us accomplish great things.  Through prayer and worship, God will help us with our faith so that it may grow stronger every day.  With our faith we can accomplish great things in our lives, and KNOW that God will be there to take care of us.  Sometimes we don't get what we want, or what we are trying to do, and foolishly question God's assistance or plans for us.  Having faith takes away all our worry and gives us the firm knowledge that God is in control.  God is ALWAYS in control.  Not a bird flaps its wings without God's say-so.  This reminds me of a Garth Brooks song (and I hate country music by the way) that goes like this,

"Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers."

So remember that if you aren't getting what you want, often times it is because God has something better in store for you.  HE knows what he future holds, and HE alone.  So have faith, and remove all arrogance in yourself knowing that God is in charge.  With the Almighty on your side, you are in good hands indeed.  Why do people put trust in themselves when God knows everything?  The Holy Book says, "Ask and you shall receive." Don't be afraid to ask Him for anything at all, no matter how far fetched your dreams or goals may seem to you.  For our Heavenly Father, nothing is out of reach.

Here is an excerpt from one of my favorite poems called "Hang it on the Cross" (Google it):
"If you have a secret sorrow,
a burden or a loss,
An aching need for healing...
Hang It On The Cross"

...Meaning that no matter what is going on in your life, let Christ carry the weight.  "Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall."
