Most times we have grandiose dreams and desires and we proceed to writing them down. While writing, we break the goals further down and analyse them from bottom up and vice versa. They look and seem achievable but we never take action on them. They remain paper dreams which we dust now ane then but I can assure you they can come alive if you determine to start taking action on them, from this very minute! And I mean it, no procrastination again!
Reasons We Don’t Take Action on Our Dreams
Reason No 1: Procrastination. You just heard me mention it. It’s a huge dream killer and would make you unhappy all the days of your life if you do not nip it in the bud. Whatever you want to do, develop the ability to do it promptly; stop pushing what you’re supposed to do today till tomorrow. You’re robbing yourself blindly. If you do what you’re supposed to do yesterday today, when are you going to do today’s task? Just think about it!
Reason No 2: Because you’ve tried and failed before and so what? The fact that you’ve tried and failed before doesn’t mean you should not try again! It just means you should try again more intelligently. Most times, we internalize failure; instead of saying the business failed, we say I fail and that gives us a negative mindset and makes us unwilling to try again.
Reason No 3: We’re waiting for perfect conditions. I call this an illusion because it would never come. There will never be the perfect time to start a business; neither would there be a perfect time for learning a sport. You just have to keep going despite this lack of perfection. In fact, if you have perfectionist tendencies, try to curb it and move on anyway, or you may never get anything done in your life. The trick is to start any how and perfect the conditions along the way. No wonder William B. Sprague said, “Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot; but make it hot by striking.”
Reason No 4: We want a bit of clarity before launching out. Again, this is an illusion as you can never get 100% clarity on a project before launching out. Start with whatever clarity you have at the beginning and as you move along, clarity would begin to set in. Or let me just say, taking action would bring the clarity you so much desire.
Reason No 5: Fear is another reason we don’t act on our dreams. Fear of failure, fear of public speaking, fear of this, fear of that holds us back from pursuing the things that matter most to us. But let me shock you by telling you that most of the things you fear don’t even exist. They are mere illusions that you’ve allowed your mind to magnify, so they look bigger than they really are. I tell you one thing today, feel the fear but do it any way. That was Susan Jeffers suggestion in a book she wrote with the same title. When you act in spite of your fear, it flies straight out of your life, forever!
Reason No 6: Lack of courage is another reason we don’t act on our dreams. All our lives, we’ve been fearful and lacking courage. That is why all our dreams are still on paper because it takes courage to lose weight, it takes courage to start a business and it takes courage to walk in front of a large group of people and talk. But, if you determine to build up courage and discipline yourself, you will achieve more goals, as a result of taking action.
So, How do You Cultivate the Taking Action Habit?
Tip No 1: Just Do It! This is sports manufacturing giant, Nike’s run-off line and I love it! It’s a simple call to action but so effective! Just do it any how and any way you want to, but, it’s a sin to stay without doing anything. Powerful! Charles F. Kettering, an Engineer and Inventor reinforces this when he said: “Keep on going and the chances are you will stumble on something, perhaps when you are least expecting it. I have never heard of anyone stumbling on something sitting down.”
Tip No 2: Take responsibility for your life. This has been a liberating tip for me. Every day, I take 100% responsibility for my life, marriage, kids, business, etc, instead of blaming others. This gives me so much power to effect the changes I want in my life, marriage, kids, business, etc. Once you tell yourself, ‘if it’s going to be, it’s up to me,’ things would become much easier for you. Most times, we don’t take action because deep in our hearts, we’re blaming someone for the current situation and this robs us of the power and energy to take action on our dreams.
Tip No 3: Be accountable to others and yourself. Setting standards for yourself would help you take action, no matter what. When you tell yourself, I want to make $1000 every month and you hold yourself accountable, you find that you jump right out of the bed every time to work on the goal or dream. In the same vein, you also have to make your goal public so people can know about it and help you achieve it. If you’re a family person, you’ve got to solicit the help of your family in achieving your goal because family (if not watched) can be a huge distraction for goals of this nature.
Tip No 4: Relish the present, stop worrying about the future. This has happened to me before, so, I can relate with it. I was in a situation where I had many things lined up and I got anxious about not achieving all of them and this affected my ability to take action on the urgent goals. Don’t allow this to happen to you! Live in the present, care more about the goals you’re trying to achieve now! Tomorrow’s goals will take care of themselves.
Tip No 5: While trying to act, you’re apt to make mistakes. Laugh them off. Don’t take yourself too seriously, neither should you internalize failure. If a business failed, accept the fact that you didn’t fail, it was the business that did and you can make a fresh start, albeit more intelligently.
There are immense benefits if you get procrastination out of your life and begin to act on your dreams now! You’d find you can get more done in less time and see your dreams unfold into reality. I bet the feeling is indescribable! It’s sleek, beautiful and rewarding to see your paper dream come to reality!
