Misaligned Teeth: Effects Beauty and Health

By Edited Oct 25, 2016 0 0

People who have crooked, crowded or misaligned teeth, overbites or underbites often seek out NY dental professionals in order to achieve perfectly straight teeth. But a lot of them don’t realize that having straight teeth while it will enhance their smile, will also help with maintaing proper oral hygiene.

If your teeth are crowded it’s difficult to follow proper dental hygiene because you cannot brush or even floss your teeth effectively. Because of this, bacteria can build up in between your teeth and in your gum line eventually leading to periodontal or gum disease. Periodontal disease, if left untreated, can cause your teeth to fall out because the gum starts to recede from the roots. This leaves your mouth extremely vulnerable to infection. If the infection goes untreated, the infection may spread into your blood or to your heart inturn causing severe health complications.

If you have an overbite or underbite then you are also causing an impact on your overall health. Straight teeth allow you to chew your food easier. It will also break down your food efficiently giving you all the nutrients you need. This aids in digestion and can help lower the risk of having gastrointestinal problems in the future. Having an overbite makes eating chewy foods difficult because the jawbones are not lined up properly. An underbite can cause permanent damage to your gum line increasing your chance of gum disease.

Having misaligned teeth can also affect the your jawbone and bite. If the bite is not perfectly aligned disorders such as TMD can start to occur. Which means you can experience headaches, neck pain, popping noises in your jaw and also a limited range of how far you can open your mouth. Sometimes even your jaw can lock.  Also, straightening your teeth will help any bruxism habits that you may have such as grinding or clenching. Misaligned teeth will eventually ware down and can become chipped or fractured.

The best time to straighten your teeth is when you are a child but if you are an adult there are still several options. There are different orthodontic appliances to help correct overbites and underbites. There are also now clear invisible braces to help straighten out any misaligned, crowded or crooked teeth.

Misaligned teeth may not look pleasing to the eye, but it is much more severe than that. There are several health risks involved if you don't fix the problem.

If you suffer from an overbite, an underbite or crooked, crowded or misaligned teeth, than you might want to talk to your NY dental professional about different treatment options in order to straighten your teeth.
