Diamonds, and specifically diamond rings, will forever be sought after and desired for their rare beauty, but the ones we typically think of aren't the only diamonds available. There is another variety that has been experiencing a gain in popularity in recent years, especially after they have been in the news because of their popularity with celebrities. This variety is known as colored diamonds or sometimes fancy color diamonds.

You may have seen stars at their movie premier wearing champagne or chocolate diamonds. Or maybe you have heard about the pink diamond engagement ring. These things have definitely influenced the recent popularity of these beautiful stones.

Creating The Color

So what causes some to be colored and some to be clear? With natural colored stones the simple answer is nature. Specific conditions must exist for diamonds to be formed in the first place. Certain elements mixed with intense heat, pressure and time create these stones. But when additional elements or circumstances are present at the same time it can cause the stones to become colored. Things like nitrogen and radiation can cause this. Different elements or circumstances will create different colors, some of which are more rare than others.

Because the circumstances necessary to create these colored diamonds are not as common these gems can be more expensive than a traditional clear diamond. Specific colors, ones that are rare, can be very expensive when you are talking about a jewelry quality stone.

Since there has been increasing interest in these stones you can find man made versions now. These man made stones are still considered a genuine diamond, they were just made by humans instead of nature. You will also find some lower color stones that have been irradiated to bring out the natural color and make the stone more desirable. These options often provide a less expensive way colored diamonds, like those found in champagne diamond jewelry.

Fancy Color Diamond Rings

With the gaining popularity of these fancy color gems you are starting to see more rings highlighting these beautiful stones. The nice thing is they come in a variety of styles and prices so those of us aren't rich and famous can enjoy them as well.

The champagne or chocolate diamond ring has become particularly popular. This color range is less rare so they are more affordable than some, like the pink diamond. But they are just as beautiful.

These fancy color gems also provide a great accent to other stones. Using small colored diamonds along with a traditional clear diamond or another stone like aquamarine can really make your ring look distinct.
