The runaways is an all-girl rock band of the 70s. Its most famous bandmates are Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. In 2010, a biopic about the creation of the band was released with two of the most famous young actresses of this generation.

The big buzz during filming

If you read news about pop culture at the time they were filming or about to film this movie, you know it was a really anticipated picture. Joan Jett, Cherie Currie and two of the most famous teen actresses, Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga, Panic Room) and Dakota Fanning (The Twilight Saga, War of the Worlds), were linked to that movie.

The paparazzi followed them around the movie set. Comments about Kristen Stewart chopping her hair and dying it black flooded the entertainment websites.

Plus, the fact that the two lead bandmembers had a "more-than-friends"-relationship interested people and how and if it would be portrayed on-screen. Publicity seem to always be a good thing in the movie business, as long as the movie is being promoted.

What People expected about the movie

The Runaways, a movie with  : good music, famous young actresses who have been known since their childhood, Joan Jett backing the movie and the Twilight Saga's star Kristen Stewart. The premise of the movie sounded like a recipe to success.

Plus, for fans of the rock band, it would be an interesting view of the band. For the rest of the world, it would be a good way to discover their music and the story of the musicians.

Did the movie reach its expectations ?

First, Kristen Stewart delivered a very convincing performance. Her work studying Joan Jett, getting her behavior was spot on. Dakota Fanning was also really good as usual.

But the movie was only about them, only the leaders, especially about Cherie Currie because this film is based on her book. Even though the band had other band members, the motion picture failed to tell the story of The Runaways as a group. Maybe we can see that as a way to explain that Joan Jett and Cherie Currie were the band but that is not doing justice to the other members.

For TV shows fans and especially Arrested Development fans, you will be disappointed not to really see Alia Shawkat in that movie and what she was capable of. Let us face it, she was mostly present as an extra in the background.

Who is this movie for ?

Mostly for Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning fans. They sang, played the instruments and delivered a very good performance even though the script is kind of superficial. You can probably enjoy this as a popcorn movie.
