The Safety Benefits of ADAS


Driver safety continues to be one of the primary concerns of car manufacturers everywhere. Recently, there has been an increasing attempt to develop car safety features that aim to prevent accidents before they occur. A big part of the this has been the development and implementation of ADAS technology. ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, and it is a term that covers a wide range of different computerized auto safety systems that are currently in varying levels of development and implementations. Here a few examples of the benefits that ADAS technology brings to the field of advanced road and driver safety.

3D Mapping

3D mapping technology is starting be implemented in on-board navigation devices. 3D terrain and road displays situated in vehicle dashboards will help drivers be more aware of their surroundings and the conditions of the road ahead. In conjunction with GPS technology, 3D terrain mapping is making it easier for ADAS driver assistance and drivers to situate themselves and be better prepared to deal with potential road hazards, especially in non-urban areas.

Smart Headlights

Advanced front-lighting systems, or AFS, enable car headlights to rotate according to the curvature of the road, thus allowing drivers better visibility and helping them avoid potential hazards. The system works by taking input from the movement of the steering wheel and using it to inform the movement of the car's headlights. New systems, however, are also implementing satellite and terrain mapping technology, so that headlights can rotate without the need for steering wheel input.

Adaptive Cruise Control

ACC stands for adaptive cruise control and it is a system that uses various different monitoring technologies like laser sensors, radar and cameras in order to the detect the speed and movement of the surrounding cars. ACC is especially useful while drivers are on the freeway. It adjusts speed and steering so that your car automatically adapts to the current traffic conditions.

Collision Avoidance

Collision avoidance systems, like ACC systems, use sensor technology to detect when you are getting dangerously close to other cars or when your car is veering off the road. These systems warn you when such hazards occur, and can even steer your car away from imminent danger.
