The Secrets of Mobile Phone Shopping

By Edited Oct 18, 2015 0 0

Nearly all of us have mobile phones nowadays. The ability to be in constant contact, not to mention being able to access the internet, is important to most of us. But this does mean that once every couple of years we're forced to go mobile phone shopping. Buying a new phone is a little overwhelming, there are lots of options out there, and you're going to be spending a fair amount of money. Today we're talking about the secrets of mobile phone shopping, those little things that will make the process both easier and cheaper. So, if you're getting ready to get that new mobile, then read this first to find out how to shop better...

Secret #1: Incentive Contracts are Usually a Bad Idea...

We know, those contracts that mobile service operators offer that give you free phones are very tempting. After all, you get a free phone as well as the calling plan that you need to run it. The problem is that those contracts are generally not a good long term way to save money. The monthly cost of an incentive contract is higher than the monthly cost of the calling plan alone, which is how the operator can afford to give you that free phone. And if you take the extra money that you're paying monthly on your incentive contract and multiply it by the number of months in your contract, you'll find that the resulting sum is more than the actual cost of the phone. It's generally a much better idea to sign up for a calling plan and then just buy the phone yourself; you'll end up saving more money that way. You should only sign an incentive contract if you really can't afford to pay for a phone up front.

Secret #2: Getting the Best iPhone Deals in the UK...

If an iPhone is your mobile of choice, then you're going to be spending a wad of cash. iPhones are great mobile devices, but they have big price tags. If you're looking for the best iPhone deals in the UK, then there is a little secret. If you go to the Apple web site, you'll find that there's a section for refurbished devices. These are phones that have been bought and returned, usually without even being used. Apple cleans and reboots these phones, as well as giving them a full technical inspection before reselling them. You won't be able to tell the difference between a refurbished iPhone and a brand new one. They even come with the full two year Apple warranty. Refurbished models are indisputably the best iPhone deals in the UK, and you'll save a fair chunk of change if you decide to go this route.

Secret #3: Buying Online is Always Cheaper...

When it comes to mobile shopping, the internet is definitely your friend. You can use one of many web sites to compare models of phones, prices of phones, and even different operator contracts. Not only that though, but nearly all retailers, including mobile operators, offer discounts for buying online. Selling electronics online has far lower overheads than selling from a physical store, so companies pass those savings along to you as an incentive for online shopping. You might want to go out and take a look at the model of phone you're thinking about buying first. But once you've done that, you can always come home and find it online. It's not a great idea to buy second hand models online though, since you won't be able to see what you're getting before you pay for it. But for brand new or refurbished models, online shopping will reap you savings.

Secret #4: You Don't Need All Those Features...

Top end mobile phones come with tons of great new features. From smart screens to huge internal memory, new models have some great benefits. However, they also have big price tags. The truth is that the average user really doesn't need most of these new features. As long as your phone has an okay processor for speed, around 16 GB of memory and a decent screen, you're going to be fine. The majority of people that buy top end mobiles don't end up using all their special new features, and just end up wasting money. If you really want to get a good deal on a phone then it needs to be a device that suits your needs, rather than being something that's new or cool. Thinking carefully about what you need from a phone will mean that you get something that satisfies you without spending a fortune on unnecessary bells and whistles.

Secret #5: When You Buy is as Important as What You Buy...

Believe it or not the timing of your purchase is pretty important. If you're going with a normal high street retailer, then it might be a good idea to wait for a sale. Most retailers have sales at least a couple of times a year, when you can get good discounts on decent phones. If you want a new release, then it's definitely a good plan to wait. Most new phones will get a price cut within the first six months or so after launching, so waiting might get you savings. Plus, of course, waiting will mean that the phone is thoroughly tested by other customers so you'll know if there are any problems with the device that you want to buy. Finally, the release of a new model is a great time to buy an older model. Nearly all manufacturers lower prices on older models when a new version is released. This is especially true for higher end phones such as iPhones or the Samsung Galaxy series.   Waiting for the release of a new model and then buying the older version means that you still get a great phone, but you also get big savings. It's common for high end phones to get discounts of around a hundred pounds when newer versions are launched.
