A lot of people really want to know the secrets to losing weight and keeping it off. Unfortunately, it’s so much easier said than done. While a lot of people spend a lot of time looking for and trying products that offer an “easy” or “quick” fix to the problem or spend a lot of money on these products, this isn’t the way to go. Losing weight and keeping it off requires you to change the habits that have brought you to where you are at this particular time. It will also require hard work and some time. All of these changes seem overwhelming at first, but it is important for your health and the rest of your life.
1. Find Your Motivation
The first thing that you need in order to be successful in a weight loss journey is to have clear motivation. You really need to know why you want to lose weight. When people are first asked this question it is often that they want to lose weight to look good, to fit into a specific item of clothing, or to go to some sort of event (wedding, reunion). However, you really want to dig deep. You want to come up with every why that you might want. If you are going to be successful in losing weight and keeping it off you will need to have a deeper reasons for the weight loss journey. Here are some good reasons to want to lose weight, but you should actually take the time to write down your own list of reasons so that you can come back to it often:
- To get healthy or to change your current health statistics. This can include (but certainly isn't limited to) heart disease and high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and even diabetes.
- To live a longer life. Those who are overweight and obese are less likely to live a long and productive life. It's easy to see it when a parent dies young (my dad died at 44) or lives a horrible life (my mom is disabled at 53). Losing weight and keeping it off can make a huge difference in how long you live, but also in the quality of life that you live as you age.
- To be there for someone else. There may be someone or more than one someone who you really want to make sure that you are able to be there for. That could be your kids, your significant other, or even your parents.
- To enjoy life more. Whether you would like to be able to do specific activities or you would just like to be able to play with the kids, enjoying life more is something that is easier to do when you are healthy and fit.
Whatever your motivations are you need to find them and make sure that you take the time to write them down. Grow your list so that when things get hard you can say, "Hey wait a minute, I really have to push through because..."
2. Find Your Support System
Some people can lose weight and keep it off all on their own. However, most people really can’t do that. A support system is going to be there to help you along the way, to give you encouragement, and also to be there to hold you accountable on the days when you just don’t feel like eating right or exercising. There are a lot of different support groups out there. Here are a few that could be helpful to you.
- Friends and family members.
- Others in your community who share your desire for weight loss.
- Online communities.
- Team Beachbody, Beachbody Coaches, and Beachbody Challenge Groups.
3. Make Lifestyle Changes
It would be nice if weight just fell off or it came off a little at a time while you enjoyed doing whatever you want to do and eating whatever you want to eat, it just doesn’t work that way. If you want to lose weight and keep it off you will want to make lifestyle changes. This includes getting rid of junk food, eating foods closer how they came from nature, and watching how many calories you eat (though that doesn’t necessarily mean that you will need to count calories). You will also want to get more active. Start walking more, taking the stairs, and participating in healthy and active activities. You should also get started with a fitness program that will help you get healthy, fit, and will help you meet your weight loss goals.
4. Be Positive
If you have been struggling with your weight or living with it for awhile it can be really easy to be negative about the whole situation. It can be easy to think that you can’t lose it, that it won’t matter how hard you work, or that things you have tried in the past haven’t worked. It’s also easy to get negative when you don’t do what you should in a day. In fact, it is a lot easier to be negative than it is to be positive. However, a positive attitude about your weight loss journey (yes, it’s definitely a journey) is important.
You need to remind yourself that you really can do this. You can make the changes that you need to make in order to lose weight. You can stick with it and get where you want to go. You need to take a moment each day to remind yourself to be positive about the whole thing. This will go a long way in helping you reach your goals and stick with your lifestyle changes.
You also need to make sure that you are working on staying positive even when you mess up. There are days when food gets the better of you or that you find yourself really tired and let your exercise slide. It happens to everyone and you need to make sure that you stay positive and that you don’t let it get the best of you. One bad day, two bad days, even a month of bad days isn’t a good reason to give up. Instead, you need to stay positive. Don’t beat yourself up. It happened. Now it is time to move on, because you really can do this!
5. Stick With It.
Having a good program that helps you to see results quickly can make it a lot easier to stick with it. However, no matter what you are doing or how slow you are going you really want to stick with it. Nothing will happen if you don’t and your whole life can and will change when you stick with it.
Keep eating healthy. It will help you get healthy.
Keep exercising. It’s important for your future.
Remember to be positive. You can do this. It will take work. It will take dedication. But you can do this!
Losing weight and keeping it off isn’t easy. It isn’t something that will happen on it’s own. You will need to decide to change your life for the better. Start by identifying your why and getting a support group gathered around you. From there you will want to make healthy choices, be positive, and stick with it. You can do it.
