A Fascinating Supplement to the Twilight Saga

As someone who has enjoyed all of the other Twilight novels by Stephenie Meyer, I was charmed and delighted by the new insight into her books that came from reading this novella, "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner." It was a fascinating view of the vampire world from an entirely different perspective … that of vampires who are not trying to behave themselves, like the Cullen family from the other novels, but as creatures who are willingly giving into their lust for blood, seemingly heedless of the danger they may be in.

This very short book tells the story of a small band of vampires who are created for the sole purpose of fighting a war for their creator. However, they are not told this until just a few days before the war is to begin.  Until then, they are given few instructions and very little information … and even some of what they are told proves to be false, which alarms and confuses them.  They are also curious about their creator, the mysterious female vampire they know only as "she."  The story unfolds as two of these vampires, Bree and Diego, try to find their way is this strange new environment, even as they struggle to remember what it was like to have once been human.  They also discover that, although they are vampires, they are also capable of caring for each other and, like other creatures, they have a powerful desire to survive.  But how can they survive, if they don't understand what is going on, and they don't know who they can trust?

Can they even trust their Creator?

Pros - What You May Like About This Novel

This is an extraordinary little jewel of a book for people who have read all the other books of the Twilight Series and find themselves clamoring for more  .If you have enjoyed reading the other novels, this addition to the Twilight literature will help you to see Stephenie Meyer's vampire world from a new perspective ... that of a newly created, blood-thirsty vampire who is struggling to survive in this confusing, and somewhat frightening world  Even if you have only seen the movies, you may still enjoy book, since it covers material that is barely mentioned in the movies.

For people who were intimidated by the idea of reading the entire series, this is a short novella which only takes 3-4 hours to read.

Cons - Why This May Not Be a Good Choice for Some People

If you have not read the other books in the Twilight series, or at least watched the movies, you would have no interest in this novella.  It is based entirely upon the idea of more fully developing a character who appears only briefly in the book, "Eclipse."

It may also put off people who liked the idea in the other books of vampires who could have some form of self-control, because the vampires in this book are definitely out-of-control.

In Closing

The bottom line is that, if you enjoyed the other Twilight novels, you will definitely also enjoy "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner."  If you have not been interested in the other Twilight novels, this book would make little sense to you.

In addition, if you are considering purchasing it for yourself or a friend, you might like to know that one dollar from each copy sold will be donated to the American Red Cross for the first two years after the initial publication date, or until all the first printing copies have been sold, whichever is first.  Therefore, you can entertain yourself with an exciting little novel, and help others at the same time!
