We're all familiar with the initial motivation that a new diet or exercise plan can bring, the exciting thought that this is finally the time when you are going to get your eating sorted, exercise harder than ever before & get the body you've been working on for years. This could last 6 months, 4 weeks or even a few days, however eventually the motivation fades & the going gets tough. Even if we have made progress towards our goals, as is often the case, when the motivation wavers, all of our hard earned progress starts to fade as well. This time however, is going to be different.

The Good News & The Bad

We're all familiar with the initial motivation that a new diet or exercise plan can bring, the exciting thought that this is finally the time when you are going to get your eating sorted, exercise harder than ever before & get the body you've been working on for years. This could last 6 months, 4 weeks or even a few days, however eventually the motivation fades & the going gets tough. Even if we have made progress towards our goals, as is often the case, when the motivation wavers, all of our hard earned progress starts to fade as well. This time however, is going to be different.

Exhaustion

The Turning Point

Life has a habit of making things most difficult for us, just before we reach the point of accomplishment. This is where most people give up. Let's take a moment to establish a hypothetical; Let's say that you have lost 5kgs. You've started walking everyday, even throwing in a few hundred metres of jogging here & there. You're fast food lunches have been replaced with salads & your work day snacks of oreos have been replaced by almonds & bananas. You start to feel good about your self & become confident that you will be able to maintain your new lifestyle. With this new found sense of confidence you head off to a birthday dinner & end up eating a little more risotto then you can really justify & you probably shouldn't have ordered that desert. It's okay though, you've done so well, come Monday you'll get right back into it. Monday, however, is a tough day at work. On your way home the last thing on your mind is going for a walk, so you skip it until tomorrow. The same thing happens on Tuesday. Then again on Wednesday.

Last week going for a walk or making your salad for lunch was just a part of your routine, however now it seems like the most difficult obstacle you could imagine. This point where you give up is actually the same point where you could have committed to this lifestyle, these wonderful changes. Forever.

What's Different This Time

There is a wonderful thing that happens when you overcome adversity such as that which we have just discussed. In this instance, splurging at the dinner is not a problem. The most difficult part is Monday when your motivation is sapped & exercise is the last thing on your mind. If you can overcome this obstacle that life has thrown in your way & persevere with your goals then you will be surprised at how quickly life quits throwing those obstacles in your way. In fact, life begins to back you & things get a whole lot easier.

That daily walk turns into a daily run, those splurges at dinner turn into weekly 'cheat meals' that allow you to stay focused on your healthy eating 95% of the time. Those 5kgs lost, turn into 50kgs. All of a sudden your a new person. Remember that feeling when going for a walk after work was the worst possible thing you could imagine? Now you have that feeling when you consider NOT going for a run.

The lifestyle choices you are making are of enormous benefit. If you can persevere with them when life throws road blocks at you, you will be amazed at how quickly they become a permanent part of your life. So next time you want to give up, when everything seems too difficult, go for that walk, make that salad & see how quickly the positive changes come.
