The Storied History of the Buckwheat Pillow

By Edited Nov 19, 2016 0 0

The buckwheat pillow has come a LONG way since it was originally developed. Thousands of years ago, the ancient Egyptians were one of the first cultures to use a pillow. As they have always been known as a pioneering culture, this case is no different. Egyptians knew the importance of getting the right amount of sleep at night, and they knew that properly supporting the neck was one of the keys. They developed the pillow to provide support and comfort, allowing their people to enjoy a solid night of rest. Buckwheat was their material of choice. The reason the Egyptians liked buckwheat for pillows was because it was inexpensive, easy to grow, and widely available throughout their empire. Of course, it was also quite comfortable as well. These reasons made it an obvious choice for their pillow stuffing material.

As time passed, and the ancient Egyptians came into contact with other cultures through trade, exploration and war, other peoples adapted the buckwheat hull pillow and began to use it themselves. This helped the advent of the buckwheat pillow spread throughout the entire world.

Buckwheat for pillows again gained dominance years later by the Chinese. They also had easy access to the material, and enjoyed the simplicity and comfort. For these reasons it was a prime choice for them in developing pillows. The Chinese took it one step further, using ornate designs to make extremely breathtaking pillows, which were used as a sort of currency for trade with other nations.

In more recent times, the popularity of the buckwheat pillow has spread throughout Europe, North and South America and even Australia! Over the last 20 years buckwheat has exponentially increased in popularity for one huge reason - it's allergy free nature! Since down has been used for hundreds of years by developed nations as a primary pillow stuffing, recently it has been discovered to lead to serious allergy problems. Although there are other allergy free options for pillows available, buckwheat has been known to be one of the most comfortable and cost effective options.

The buckwheat hull pillow has an amazing history, but as more and more people around the world are turning to it as a legitimate option for fighting allergies, there is no doubt that this is only the beginning!
