From semi-automatic rifles to space age weapons, Call of Duty: Black Ops: Zombies offers a collection of firearms with which you can annihilate hordes of brain-dead, drooling zombies. What follows is a weapons compendium with photographs of their real world counterparts, ranked from highest to lowest.  Factors such as rate of fire, utility, availability and cost were used in critiquing the subsequent weapons and are based on my opinions and experience in using them, both in game and in real world military situations. Mind you, I have never encountered a zombie while serving in the U.S. Army. However, I have had the pleasure of training and using all of the weapons documented in this compendium and I feel the producers of Blacks Ops make a true and accurate representation of these weapons in the game.

1) M16

M16
M203(113940)

Advantages:

  • Full auto, extremely high rate of fire when upgraded in Pack-a-Punch. This will enable you to drop hordes of mindless zombies to their knees like your drunken uncle passing out at a Christmas party in Black Ops: Zombies co-op
  • When upgraded in the Pack-a-Punch machine, the M16 becomes a dual-purpose weapon and a zombie annihilator’s dream. The M203 grenade launcher is installed underneath the barrel of the M16 and comes with 9 grenades, which are replenished when a Max Ammo perk drops
  • You can purchase  ammo (which also refills your M203 grenades) for the upgraded M16 for 4500 points,  off the wall on the front part of the stage in the Black Ops: Zombies: Kino der Toten map, which is beneficial because sometimes you will go a long time between Max Ammo drops
  • Highly accurate and easy to target zombies without the targeting sights obscuring your vision.
  • Virtually no muzzle climb or weapon bounce when firing the weapon on full auto
  • Highly portable, affording you the ability to move and run faster

Disadvantages:

  • The M16 is one of the more costly weapons to purchase off the wall in Black Ops: Zombies at the steep price of 1200 points. Additionally, in order to take full advantage of the M16 (full auto, M203 grenade launcher) you will have to upgrade it in the Pack-a-Punch machine
  • When not upgraded, the M16 is semi-automatic, firing in 3 round bursts. It takes several trigger pulls to down a zombie if you’re shooting center mass (shooting target in torso, middle of chest). However, if you purchase the M16, regardless of upgrade, you should always endeavor to shoot at the zombie’s head. Shooting a zombie in the head is an instant kill and obviously thins the zombie herd a lot faster than shooting it center mass
  • One of the last weapons encountered and found in the middle of the Kino der Toten map, behind the teleporter in Zombies Black Ops

2) Commando (M4)

M4

Advantages:

  • High rate of fire which enables the zombie annihilator the ability to massacre zombies efficiently and quickly without having to get headshots
  • Two, forty round magazines taped together “jungle- style” (the practice of taping two magazines or clips together, with one taped upside down and the other in the rifle. This would allow the soldier to reload the weapon more quickly) when upgraded in Pack-a-Punch. This gives you, the would-be zombie annihilator, plenty of bullets to smoke zombies without frequent reloads
  • Quick reload even when not upgraded
  • Highly accurate and easy to target zombies without the targeting sights obscuring your vision
  • Highly portable, affording you the ability to move and run faster
  • With its small profile and non-obscuring sights makes this a perfect, close quarter combat weapon

Disadvantages:

  • The Commando is found in the mystery box. The mystery box spawns randomly around the map. When one tries to purchase a weapon from the mystery box, you are gambling on getting a poor weapon or a weapon you do not like. Therefore, it is not guaranteed you will get the Commando weapon.
  • You cannot purchase ammo for the Commando in Zombies Black Ops. You will have to replenish your bullets for the Commando by getting a random Max Ammo perk-which does not make sense because the M16 and Commando shoot the same 5.56x45mm round in reality. Theoretically, you should be able to purchase the ammo for the Commando off the wall when you purchase the ammo for the M16.
  • Unlike the M16, the Commando does not come equipped with a secondary weapon when upgraded in the Pack-a-Punch machine.

3) Galil

Galil

Advantages:

  • Full auto, extremely high rate of fire
  • Highly accurate
  • When upgraded in Pack-a-Punch, the Galil gains an ACOG (Advanced Combat Optical Gun sight) with a bright aiming reticle. The ACOG on the Galil is the best ACOG in the game in that it does not obscure you vision which makes targeting a breeze.
  • Robust ammunition-when upgraded in Pack-a Punch, the ammunition capacity is increased to 375 total rounds

Disadvantages:

  • Random weapon found in Mystery Box, which means there is no guarantee that this weapon will be given
  • Unable to purchase ammunition for this weapon; refill is dependent upon a Max Ammo drop
  • Weapon does not gain a secondary weapon when upgraded
  • Slow reload- which means the Speed Cola perk should be purchased if you want to reload this weapon quickly

3) MP40

MP40

I consider the MP40 and the subsequent weapon, the AK-74U to be a toss- up. Both weapons have their advantages and disadvantages, explained below:

Advantages:

  • The MP40 can be purchased off the wall for a meager 500 points.
  • Easily encountered-you purchase this weapon, on the Kino der Toten map in the second room to the right of the lobby starting room
  • Full auto without having to upgrade it in Pack-a-Punch
  • Ammunition for the MP40 can be purchased off the wall for 500 points and for 4500 points when upgraded in Pack-a-Punch
  • Portable-which facilitates easier movement and running

Disadvantages:

  • Low rate of fire even after upgraded- which means in order to kill a zombie instantly, you will have to get headshots. To make this weapon viable after upgrade, you should consider the Speed Cola and Double Tap perks in order to down zombies quicker
  • Tends to be inaccurate due to increased muzzle climb

5) AK-74u

AK-74u

Advantages:

  • Reasonable rate of fire
  • Relatively powerful round, which enables you to kill zombies faster in earlier rounds without having to upgrade it
  • Ammunition can be purchased off the wall for 600 points; upgraded ammo for 4500
  • Portable and low profile, making it easier to move and run faster
  • Encountered early in the game on the Kino der Toten map, second area to the left of the lobby starting area

Disadvantages:

  • When upgraded, the ACOG is obscuring and a hindrance, making targeting difficult
  • Non-upgraded weapon magazine has low ammo capacity, which means you have to reload frequently (20 rounds per magazine)
  • Does not come with a secondary weapon when upgraded
  • Expensive to purchase off the wall at the cost of 1200 points

6) RPK

RPK

Advantages:

  • Huge ammo capacity
  • Reasonable rate of fire
  • Reasonable price

Disadvantages:

  • Very slow reload
  • Random weapon found in Mystery Box
  • High profile, making it difficult to maneuver and run quickly
  • Inaccurate due to a lot of muzzle climb
  • Cannot purchase ammo

7) HK21

HK21

Advantages:

  • Large ammo capacity
  • Reasonable rate of fire
  • Reasonable price

Disadvantages:

  • Very slow reload
  • Random weapon found in Mystery Box
  • High profile, making it difficult to maneuver and run quickly.
  • Inaccurate due to a lot of muzzle climb.
  • Cannot purchase ammo for it

8) AUG

AUG

Advantages:

  • High rate of fire
  • Reasonable reload time
  • Reasonable ammo capacity
  • Upgraded, it gains a secondary weapon-a relatively weak shotgun- attached to the underside of the barrel

Disadvantages:

  • Inaccurate
  • Poor visibility when looking through ACOG
  • Cannot purchase ammo for it.

In summary, my opinion and experience were used to categorize, rank and critique a cross-section of some of the best assault rifles, MGs (Machine Guns) and carbines encountered in Call of Duty: Black Ops: Zombies. Additionally, instruction was given on where and how to purchase said weapons, specifically on the Kino der Toten map. For further explanation of TTPS (tactics, techniques and procedures) on how to improve your game play on the Zombies maps of Black Ops, be on the lookout for my summarized TTP manual to be released soon.
