Furnace filters are something that every home owner who maintains their furnace knows about. What some homeowners may not be aware of however is that the furnace filters they are currently using may cause them to spend a whole lot more money in the long run then they really need to. This is because they either use disposable filters that are expensive over time, they use cheap filters that will result in costly repairs to their furnace or the same cheap filters may result in such damage to their furnace that it needs to be replaced - a tremendous expense.

Disposable fiberglass furnace filters are used widely because they are easy. As with any disposable product, you just throw it out once used and replace it with another disposable filter. Disposable products are very convenient but costly in the long run. It really only takes a few extra minutes to wash a reusable furnace filter and replace it and you will save a lot of money in the course of the season since you won't have to keep buying replacement filters all the time. Disposable filters are also lower quality then their reusable counterparts and this can cause problems too.

Disposable filters are lower quality then the washable filter variety. The result of their lower quality is that more dust and particles have a chance of entering your furnace. When dust and other particles start to accumulate inside your furnace, it will speed the deterioration of your furnace parts. Replacing furnace parts will then become an extra expense caused by the use of cheap filters. If you can change the parts yourself, at least you won't have to pay for a repair man's time. If you can't, you'll have to add the repair man's time on top of the price of the parts. Eventually, cheap filters will shorten the life of your furnace.

If you keep using cheap furnace filters, your will inevitably shorten the life of your furnace. Having to buy a new furnace is the ultimate expense. While this won't happen in a year or two it will happen more quickly then if you'd used better quality filters. Washable reusable furnace filters will put off this large expense.

If you want to save money then choose your furnace filters wisely. Disposable are easy but you'll pay the cost in having to make constant purchases and in possible repairs to your furnace due to the cheap disposable filters letting in too much dust. Spending a little more up front for reusable furnace filters will pay off in the long run.
