The Useful Reclosable Bag
Although just about every bag we use is actually reclosable, normally when we refer to reclosable bags we are talking about the small plastic bags that are common in every kitchen and home these days, with the more famous brand being the Ziploc bags, for example. Now, there are many different brands of reclosable plastic bags although most of them are very similar in what they offer, what they are made from, and their usage.
These days, most of the reclosable plastic bags are closed with a zipper type closure, that snaps the two sides of the open bag closed. It is a very effective closure and it does an excellent job of sealing off the bag so that no air can get into the bag, and nothing can leak out of the bag either. To use, you simply place the food into the plastic bag, fold it over so that the air is forced out of the top of the bag, and then seal it shut. Air contains bacteria that can contaminate the food, which is why it is important not to have air included in the bag when storing food.
While there are other types of reclosable plastic bags, the type using the zipper closing is far more widely used these days. Another type of reclosable bag uses something akin to double-sided tape on one edge of the bag. This can be pressed down to close the bag, and reopened again, however it is not as secure nor does it work as well as the zipper style closing.
You can find reclosable bags in many different sizes, ranging from tiny snack pack bags, to huge gallon freezer bags. This makes it very easy to choose which ones you need, and most people find it simplest to keep a whole selection of different sized bags on hand.
Some bags are made for specific purposes. Freezer bags, for example, are usually the larger sized bags and they are made from thicker gauge plastic as well. Some are even double bags, and they do an awesome job of keeping your food safely sealed inside the bag and free from freezer burn. You can also find bags that are specifically designed to store fresh fruit and vegetables. These type of recloseable bags have tiny holes in them, to allow the movement of moisture in and out of the bag--something that is important if you are to keep your vegetables fresh.
No matter what your specific need, you should find it fairly simple to find a recloseable bag that suits your purpose.
