The Windsor Report Volume 1 Issue 1
I know this is a bit different since most people have earnings reports. However, I am a new writer and I do not have any earnings to show yet. Nevertheless I thought it would be interesting to write about my experience on InfoBarrel as a new writer. Who knows? It might be interesting a year or two from now.
Signing up for InfoBarrel
I spent a lot of time thinking about becoming an author on InfoBarrel. During this time I read a few articles. I joined InfoBarrel under someone who appeared to really enjoy the site. Because I know what drew me to InfoBarrel, I try to write articles that I think other people would also enjoy.
The first day at InfoBarrel, I guess it is a little like the first day of school without all of the obligatory photographs. You do, however, need to introduce yourself in the forum (participating in the forum can really benefit you). Basically, you sign up and then you have to figure out what to do next. The obvious thing is of course to write. I spent a lot of time just thinking about the article that I would write. For some reason I kept agonizing on the topic of my first article.
So I finally selected a topic. My topic was basically how to select a topic for your first article. I wrote the article because I was struggling with writing my first article and I thought it would be helpful to other articles (if you are really curious you can read the article). After I wrote my first article, I clicked the publish button.
When you are a new writer your articles are not automatically put on the website (it is a way to maintain a certain amount of quality and to prevent spamming). After submitting my first article, I was approved within a few hours (yes a few hours!). I do recognize that this does not happen on every article, but it was so exciting to have a quick approval.
So during the same week, I became a little concerned that this was a little too easy. I really started to think that I must be missing something. Seriously, it really troubles me that I am just randomly selecting topics and writing articles (Yes, I am someone who spends a lot of time thinking and rethinking everything).
I decided that I should really do a little more research before I spent a ton of time writing a lot of articles. I did a little research on the internet and realized that one of the best things to learn is search engine optimization (SEO). I decided to learn about SEO and received some recommendations for resources in the forum (I told you it was helpful). I read all of those resources during the week. I know that I will still need to refer back through The Art of SEO but reading it was extremely helpful.
I also took the time to become more familiar with InfoBarrel. I know people say to get familiar with the site but no one is very clear about what they did. I went through and read the general rules for InfoBarrel, articles in InfoBarrel University, and a couple of threads in the forum (I also learned to search the forum). I also looked at the tools that are available for writers and learned about the options in my account. Honestly, these tasks are easy to do and will help me be a better writer for InfoBarrel.
I decided to spend most of my time writing articles on nine topics that were familiar to me. I submitted the articles a few days after I wrote them.
While writing, I decided that it would be a good idea to spend more time in the forum and read articles by other members. This is definitely one of the best things that I did. It is easy to spend time focusing on writing your articles, but the value of the community adds to the success of InfoBarrel.
After submitting the articles, I accomplished my goal of becoming an approved writer. In case you do not know, before you become approved, you have to submit your articles to the administration for approval before they are shown on the site.
On the same day, someone signed up for InfoBarrel under my account. It was pretty exciting. The funny thing is that it was so unexpected. I don’t even know if I had a signature box on any of my articles at that time (which is something that I need to work on). I guess this just goes to show you that you can get unexpected traffic on InfoBarrel that could benefit you.
Right now, I am attempting to write more articles on topics that I think could do well during the holiday season and that are going to entertaining for me to write. I like to look at the editorial calendar for the month and think about articles that would be easy to write. After learning about SEO, I also want to write articles that have good titles and keywords.
My advice for other new writers is to just keep writing articles. There are a ton of resources available on InfoBarrel to inspire and educate you. If you have a question, ask it in the forum or use the inbox feature to send a message to one of your friends. Also, do not get discouraged if you are not getting as much traffic as you expect as an early writer. I do not expect to receive significant traffic for a few months at least.
If you are not a writer for InfoBarrel, but you are interested in the opportunity you should join. The great thing about InfoBarrel is that it is easy for beginners to start and the community is friendly.
Well, that is all for now.
