The Indian state of Bihar is situated in the north eastern part of India. It lies in the Hindi speaking heart land of India. For some reason it is referred to as the “Cow Belt”. The term is used for those states of India that are situated on the plains of the river Ganges. In addition, other states that speak Hindi also come in this category such as Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Unfortunately, the name refers to the poor conditions and living standards of the people of Bihar and the above mentioned states. It also signifies that this region is agricultural based and a rural based economy and hence the cow belt.
The capital of Bihar is Patna. The city of Patna is regarded as one of the ancient cities of India and some historians consider it as one of the oldest among the world. Previously, Patna around 600 B.C. was called Patliputra. It is here where the worlds most dynamic ruler called “Ashoka The Great” ruled. It is here were Buddhism was taken to China, Sri Lanka and most of the Far East.
In its glorious days, Bihar imported algebra (Aryabhatta wrote a thesis on algebra), the Kamasutra was written by Vatsayana, Buddha spent most of his life here, Ashoka exported Buddhism from Bihar, Mahavira the founder of Jainism was born and taught in this very land of Bihar.
However, it is said that the more ancient a nation, the more desperate situation they are in today. Good examples are Persia (modern Iran), India, China, Egypt and Mesopotamia. The above examples could be seen as countries or areas of the world that had ancient civilisations. These countries formed the foundation of mathematics, medicine, literature and philosophy. Culture was at its very best but today they do not feature amongst the great of countries. This is the case with Bihar, with its civilisation and ancient culture it does not feature as a state of importance in the modern world.
