Step One - The secret to losing weight

Everywhere we go people are obsessed with their appearance. Be it their hair, skin or even the colour of their eyes. I agree that one should take pride in one's appearance as we all want to make a good first impression. However what is the first thing a person sees when they look at you? It is not your blonde hair, rosy cheeks or even your baby blue contact lenses. It is your weight!

The ideal weight has been a much debated topic for years and I don't believe that there is a right answer. What I believe in is leading a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating a balanced diet and ensuring that you do some form of exercise. A balanced diet does not entail cutting out carbohydrates from your diet completely nor do you have to start residing at the local gym. We need to stop exposing our bodies to such extreme torture only to stop after a week or two. The reason for this is that such drastic diets are not sustainable and only leaves you feeling more dejected and hopeless at the end of it all.

So what is the secret you ask? The secret is moderation! In everything you do, practice moderation. You need to start slowly; be it in the amount of food you consume or the amount of physical exercise you do. Take baby steps! Firstly you need to realise that you need to control what you put into your body. The easiest thing to do is to cut down on all the bad stuff such as take-outs, chocolates, fizzy drinks etc. Please note that I said cut DOWN and not cut OUT! It is always easier to limit your intake of a certain food than to not have it at all. With regards to exercise, it should not have to feel like you are being tortured. Do something that you enjoy such as Taebo, Zumba or skipping while listening to your favourite songs. Be it going for an early morning jog before work or even taking the stairs instead of the lift. All you need to do is increase your heart rate!
