Heartburn affects millions of people whether on a daily basis, weekly or on occasion. It is a burning feeling and pain in the stomach and chest. Symptoms of heartburn include bloating, gas, nausea, difficulty swallowing and a sour taste in the mouth.

If you constantly suffer from heartburn then it is advised that you treat it as, after awhile, the repeated flow of acid through the esophagus can cause cancer. Drug treatments are common and they do work but natural remedies are worth trying as well.

Garlic is known for boosting the immune system. It is a commonly used home treatment for many ailments. Raw garlic has been found to kill pathogenic microorganisms which are sometimes found in sufferers of gastritis.

When you are experiencing heartburn just chew a clove of garlic or, alternatively, you can put a few cloves in apple cider vinegar and take a sip when you feel heartburn.

You should take precaution, however, when using garlic as it can interfere with certain prescription drugs so consult your physician before use. Also, we are all aware of garlic's association with bad breath so keep this in mind.


This wonderful fruit contains the enzyme papain – found to help digestion and is a natural remedy for heartburn. Just eat the fruit before meals or at first signs of heartburn symptoms. Please note that if you are pregnant you should not eat the fruit.


Fresh bananas that are not too ripe are worth trying as a natural remedy for heartburn. Proponents believe that this particular fruit is a natural antacid that coats the stomach. Diabetics should be careful when using this remedy as well as individuals taking MOA inhibitors.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Some individuals can handle drinking apple cider straight but if you are like me and can't handle the taste then do the following: Mix 1 tablespoon with a bit of sugar, add 6 ozs. Of water and add a small amount of baking soda. Drink while fizzy.

Apple cider vinegar is said to neutralize stomach acid as well as it allows the esophageal sphincter to contract and hence keep the acid in the stomach. You should take care to not let the vinegar touch the teeth as this wears away tooth enamel. It is suggested you drink with a straw or dilute it with water.


Consume a handful of almonds at the first sign of heartburn. They are a great natural remedy for heartburn as their high oil content neutralizes stomach acid. It need not be said that if you have a tree nut allergy you should try another solution for heartburn.
