A retired arguably inescapable prison located on Alcatraz Island on the San Francisco Bay is one of the best attractions available in the San Francisco area.   You will arrive by boat and will be able to walk the grounds and the prison interior as the prisoners once did.   There are audio guides that will narrate what you are seeing while you walk through the cell blocks, kitchen, and other main areas. You will even have a chance to experience solitary confinement.
