Things to Consider About Depression

We all know by now about depression. You see  commercials dealing with this condition. Many of these commercials are promoting the use of medical drugs to  treat this problem as if it is something that is caused by a virus. I find it funny hearing that you need some form of drug in order to modify your mood. After all, these commercials say that depression may be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. While that may actually be the case, there are a lot of other things to consider about depression before popping pills.

One thing you should consider is that we live in a society that is characterized by regular consumption of empty calories coupled with a sedentary lifestyle. This is a deadly combination and I could even be bold to say that this could be what is causing a lot of cases of depression. However, the sad fact is that many people seem to be trigger happy when it comes to pills. As a matter of fact, if you are feeling sad and other people know it, they will likely tell you to pop a pill. One thing that is so sad about this and one thing that makes me question this whole pop-a-pill culture is that many times, what is advertised as a treatment for depression is later recalled in an advertisement for causing suicide. I tell this to people and what do they say? "Take another pill." Seriously? Are you guy really trying to get me strung out? You guys are every bit as bad as the narcotic junkies that I was unfortunately raised around. 

One reason that I refuse to rush into pharmacutical pills is because many sources list depression as a symptom of many other problems. A lot of these problems are nutritional deficiency problems. It is a symptom for problems such as vitamin B deficiencies, protein deficiencies and many more problems like it including hypoglycemia. Fixing a depressive disorder could be as simple as adjusting your diet. When you are lacking on certain nutrients, it could effect the brain in certain ways which could cause a chemical imbalance if you may. After all, the body does use different nutrients for different reasons.

I am not saying that you should never take medication for depression. In fact, the most severe cases might need to take a dose in order to stabilize. After that, steps must be taken to solve the problem as soon as possible so that the patient does not have to be popping pills for the rest of his life. 

While depression is a very large problem, it is not always necessary to take a drug. There are many different causes for it. These causes could include loss of loved ones, loss of job, significant lifestyle changes, moving to a new location, prolonged stress and many other factors that could contribute to a depressive disorder. It is very important for you to talk with a professional and determine what the root cause for your depression is before attempting to treat it. Providing the wrong type of treatment could result in bad outcomes like suicide.
