Plitvice Lake is one of the most visually stunning nature scenes I have ever witnessed. It is difficult to truly appreciate through photos. Have you ever had that experience in natur where you see this spectacular site only to look back through your photos to see nothing does that moment justice? That sums up Plitvice.
Plitvice is the pride of Croatian National Parks. This is a series of naturally occuring lakes connected by cascading waterfalls. It is a park designed for the tourists. It is located about 2 hours outside of Zadar and is easy to get to by bus. Once you arrive at the park there is a modest entrance fee. There are shuttles that will drive you around the park but one of the best ways to experience Plitvice is to walk around the wooden gangplank that surrounds the park. This lets you experience the fresh air and natural beauty all around you.
Plitvice is in a heavily forested area. The beauty of this is that you get a spectacular experience in any season you visit. These lakes are surrounded by trees that turn bright orange and red in the fall months. In the winter the trees are layered with snow and the waterfalls freeze over. This causes you to experience an eerily calm quiet instead of the constant rushing of water.
If you love the outdoors then I highly recommend you stop everything and plan your trip to Croatia. This country is full of hidden wonders like Plitvice. If you know a local Croat or someone that travels to Croatia frequently then it is best to buddy up with them. They will give you advice and guidance that is priceless. When I went to Plitvice I was with a German who had been many times growing up. He knew where to go and what to do to experience the best views that Plitvice has to offer. Because of this I was able to experience the park and breathtaking scenery without getting sucked into shuttle rides and wasting time walking around aimlessly. It really helped to have that sense of direction and guidance.
