Things to Do in New York During Winter

By Edited Feb 1, 2014 0 0

New York’s music scene proves the city’s reputation as a melting pot of cultures. The annual Ecstatic Music Festival celebrates this diversity by showcasing the collaborative efforts of musicians crisscrossing the boundaries of musical genres from classical to punk.

This year, the festival is on its third series, featuring 120 composers and performers who will take the center stage at the Merkin Concert Hall starting January 25 to March 21.

An interesting night to catch is indie rock hero Deerhoof’s collaboration with Dal Niente and Marcos Balter on February 20.

Comic John O’Donnell will once again invite 50 of the best comics in New York to deliver 2013’s 50 first jokes. Warm up your bellies with huge servings of laughter and a rare meet-and-greet session with some of your favorite funny people.

The improv event will be held at The Bell House on January 4.

The NYC Restaurant Week is the city’s most popular food event. Imagine a vast selection of scrumptious gourmet bargains in town all to be found in one venue. The NYC Restaurant Week could last up to 10 days and could even be extended as the excitement makes participants salivate for more of what New York has to offer.

If you're a tourist, you don’t need a New York map to search for the city’s finest palate treats this year. Around 300 eateries are expected to participate. Details on the venue and schedule will be announced soon.

The event is not in any way related to the Occupy Movement neither does it have any intentional political motive. The Eight Annual Freeze Tag held on the corner of Wall Street and Broad Street is sponsored by tours company, The Levy’s Unique New York. Participants are treated to a nostalgic trip down to the days when child’s play did not involve joysticks and touch screens.

This is your chance to play your favorite tag game with New Yorkers and other tourists who all come to have some fun in the chilling outdoors. The only catch is that your play clothes should comprise a warm trench coat and a pair of boots as it would surely be freezing out there. The event is on a Sunday, January 20, and it’s free to join.

Improv Everywhere’s 12th annual No Pants Subway Ride will be held on January 13, also a Sunday. For those who are not familiar with the event, riding the subway in a freezing New York weather will be a day to remember as you find a bunch of random pranksters boarding the train without pants on.

No Pants Subway Ride has become a global event since its inception in 2002 as likeminded folks the world over have been celebrating their own versions simultaneous to the New York event.
