Things to do in Koh Samui

By Edited Nov 10, 2016 0 0

Fun activities for everyone

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second biggest island. It is blessed with more than 20 great beaches, a beautiful interior, many coral reefs off the coast and a great year round climate. The island also has an airport. It is for these reasons that Koh Samui has become second only to Phuket as Thailand’s most visited beach holiday location. As a result the island has developed good amenities and facilities and has an impressive number of things to do.

Many of the activities on Koh Samui are connected to the geography of the region. There are plenty of dive schools that teach beginners and take qualified divers out to the best dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand such as Sail Rock and Ang Thong National Marine Park. For those who prefer snorkeling there are a number of corals near Samui’s coast at Chaweng, Coral Cove Bay and Laem Set that hold a plethora of colorful marine life.

Other water sports available include kite boarding at Bang Po, sailing at Bophut and windsurfing at Laem Set.

For those keen to experience some of the beauty of the interior of the island there is a company based in Chaweng that take customers into the heart of the forest where they have a series of tree houses connected by zip lines. The company is appropriately called ‘Canopy Adventures’. Another option is to go on an elephant trek to Na Muang waterfall in the interior.

Koh Samui has developed a reputation for its excellent yoga courses and spa treatments. Places such as Kamalaya Spa in Laem Set and the Samui Dharma Healing Center in Lipa Noi are two wellness centers with a wide range of expertise in treatments, homeopathy and meditation techniques that have been reviewed by international newspapers such as the Telegraph in the UK.

Another activity in Koh Samui is to see animals. There are a number of options available. At Laem Set beach there is the Samui Aquarium and Tiger Show that also has an aviary. Nearby is Samui Butterfly Garden. It is a large netted area with lots of species of butterfly and tropical flowers. Near Taling Ngam is Samui Snake Farm. They put on a show that is not for the faint hearted.

Golf is a popular holiday sport that is available on Koh Samui. There is a driving range, some small courses and a full size course near Maenam beach. For big boys there is a go kart course near Bophut that has some powerful carts to race.

Finally, Koh Samui has recently sought to increase its number of activities to attract a wider range of guests. For two years now there has been a jazz festival held around the island. Samui Jazz Festival in 2011 invited more than 100 jazz musicians both Thai and international to play a variety of styles. Another annual event is the Princess’s Cup Marathon. It features a half marathon and a full marathon and is open to all to enter. Both these events are held in September.

Even from this brief review it is more than obvious that Koh Samui has an activity that will interest nearly everyone. This is no doubt part of the enduring attraction of the tropical paradise island.
