Christmas in Newport, RI is a month-long look-back into the history of America's once second largest colonial city with a modern celebration of the Christian holiday and Hanukkah; a full calendar of events everyday during the month of December. Kids things to do and lots for adult enjoyment as well.
Its formal origin as a charitable organization began 41 years ago, but really got its start way before then. Ruth Myers, the wife of a retired Navy man, organized a group of volunteers to spread the word in 1971. Every Christmas in Newport event is free or must benefit a charity in the community. along Bellevue Avenue, wharves, shops, and trees twinkle with clear illumination in the crisp dark nights through New Year's Eve. Every candlelit window and narrow colonial street lit by gaslights signals a welcoming greeting to holiday visitors and guests.
On December 3rd, It's Open House at the 41st Annual Bowen's Wharf Christmas Tree Lighting with caroling and visits by Santa and Mrs. Claus accompanied by Frosty the Snowman.

There are cookie decorating parties for kids at the Hyatt Regency, arts and crafts fairs, wreath sales, and yes, a production of the Nutcracker at Rosecliff Mansion on Bellevue Avenue and as well, "Annie" at Rogers High School.
The Newport Art Museum presents a Victorian Christmas Feast and at historic Trinity Church on Queen Anne's Square in downtown Newport, participate in a Christmas Silver Tea.
