Its formal origin as a charitable organization began 41 years ago, but really got its start way before then. Ruth Myers, the wife of a retired Navy man, organized a group of volunteers to spread the word in 1971. Every Christmas in Newport event is free or must benefit a charity in the community. The windows of historic homes in the Point Section and Historic Hill, churches, Preservation Society Newport Mansions along Bellevue Avenue, wharves, shops, and trees twinkle with clear illumination in the crisp dark nights through New Year's Eve. Every candlelit window and narrow colonial street lit by gaslights signals a welcoming greeting to holiday visitors and guests.
On December 3rd, It's Open House at the 41st Annual Bowen's Wharf Christmas Tree Lighting with caroling and visits by Santa and Mrs. Claus accompanied by Frosty the Snowman.
Newport, Rhode Island, founded in 1639, overflows with a vast colonial history beginning before the Revolution where many of America's oldest active churches and Touro Synagogue still welcome visitors and worshipers. Learn why celebrating the Christmas holiday at one time was forbidden.

Climb aboard beginning December 2nd, at 4 pm and 6:30 pm, reservations are required and sell out quickly.
There are cookie decorating parties for kids at the Hyatt Regency, arts and crafts fairs, wreath sales, and yes, a production of the Nutcracker at Rosecliff Mansion on Bellevue Avenue and as well, "Annie" at Rogers High School.
The Newport Art Museum presents a Victorian Christmas Feast and at historic Trinity Church on Queen Anne's Square in downtown Newport, participate in a Christmas Silver Tea.
There is Christmasmusic galore from the U. S. Navy Chorus, lessons and carols at several venues, choral and acoustic concerts, puppet shows, a giant gingerbread hoCredit: Tom Brosnahanuse, and tree-trimming at the Elms, one of the Newport Mansions. There's even an AmericanGirlDollChristmasfashionshow event and a concert by the Russian St. Peterburg's Men's Ensemble.
