Things to do in Portland Oregon

Portland Oregon is an interesting place to visit. There are many kinds of people as well as different areas in the city. There are movie stars and the more cultured parts of the city such as the art district with the art and history galleries. There are nature and bike trails as well as gardens. There is something for everyone in this town.

For the nature lovers, visit the many beautiful gardens in Portland. The International Rose Test Garden is the oldest operated public rose garden in the U.S. There are more than 8,000 roses in this garden which is located in Washington Park. The best viewing months are May through September. Open daily and admission is free.

For the people who want nature with a mix of culture, visit the Lan Su Chinese Garden. This is an authentically built Ming Dynasty style garden. It is open year round and fees are different for each season. There are covered walk ways, bridges, pavilions and a picturesque lake. Public and audio tours are available. There is a teahouse that serves light snacks and traditional teas. There are summer concerts and a two week Chinese New Year celebration. 

For those who like interactive science exhibits, don't miss the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). This is one of the nation's most leading science museums. It's 219,000 square feet, has five halls with hundreds of interactive exhibits. This is not free, but admission is not bad for what a person gets to experience. They also have a huge theater to watch movies on. This is called OMNIMAX. Explore a world class planetarium, tour a real submarine and get involved in lab demonstrations. 

There are many other sights to see in Portland.  The Portland Art Museum  is the oldest art museum in the Northwest. Don't miss the Portland Saturday Market which is the nation's largest open air market. Look for free concerts and entertainment. Many sports events take place in the Rose Garden arena. There are also other events there like ice skating and plays. There are many shopping areas and malls. The mall by the Rose Garden has an ice skating rink inside. There is also the Pittock Mansion which is 1,000 feet above the city's skyline. There is also the Oregon Zoo with more than 2,000 animals from around the world. Portland, Oregon is a place you won't want to miss visiting.
